I tend to be uptight and high strung. I feel like I can relate to IA and have similar personality traits as him. In addition to the big things in life rattling my cage, I can also relate to the crumbs on a breakfast table or the bad plumbing ruining my mood like in RoTR, and similar themes in Black Sunday.
I was listening to LITP, and I thought that it seemed like the happiest Tull song there is. It starts with 'happy!'
I seem not to be able to think of any right now, can anyone think of any others? Are the more positive songs generally the earlier ones?

I think there are number of positive, happy or uplifting songs throughout the history of Tull. SFTW has a few. One I always liked and felt uplifting is The Chequered Flag (Dead Or Alive). Some may not agree, but it leaves one ready to give things another go.

Well Ian always said he only wrote 2 songs, love and hate. And if there's no complaint it must be something he's loving! "Your fingers may freeze worse things happen at seas there's good times to be had". And I only joke about 4WD because everyone seems to dislike it so much and you keep bringing it up Paul. It's actually is the closest thing Tull has to a "deep groove" rhythm section. Pegg and Craney are doing some fine work there. Darin

Living in the Past being the origin example, I assumed upbeat songs with a happy melody? Is that the same thing as "positive"? I guess it depends on how it makes you feel personally. Some of these songs on the list I consider some of the saddest Tull tunes. Chequered Flag for instance. Although I can see how it could also be uplifting. Home was played at 2 funerals for very close family members of mine, therefore for me it's a pretty sad tune. "Fire at Midnight" is my next positive pick

I once put together a compilation of Jethro Tull / Ian Anderson sole tracks. I called it: Happy Tull... Well I soon discovered that it wasn’t that easy... but then again... nothing is easy... Finally, in lack of happy tunes, I renamed the compilation, and called it: “Happy Tull, with minor depressions...” I included: Wethercock. Salamander. Teacher. Flute Solo Improvisation/God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman/Bouree. Witch’s Promise. Up The Pool. In The Pay Of Spain. Dun Ringill. Acres Wild. Songs From The Wood. Pied Piper. North Sea Oil. Nothing Is Easy. Inside. Living In The Past. (Live) Life’s A Long Song. Kelpie. Cheerio. Yes, it is highly debatable. The point is that Ian rarely writes happy songs and many of the songs that carries a happy feeling, aren’t really happy at all. I included Kelpie, at the time, because I thought it was a happy song, but when I read about what a Kelpie was... Kelpie: The Kelpie is a supernatural water horse from Celtic folklore that is believed to haunt the rivers and lochs of Scotland and Ireland. In mythology, the Kelpie is described as a strong and powerful horse. Its hide was supposedly black (Though in some stories it was white), and appeared as a lost pony, but could be identified by it’s constantly dripping mane. Its skin was said to be that of a seal, smooth but as cold as death when touched. Kelpie were said to transform into beautiful women to lure men into their traps. The water horse would encourage children to ride on its back, and once its victims fell into its trap, the water horse’s skin would become adhesive and the Kelpie would bear the children into the river, dragging them to the bottom of the water and devouring them-except the heart or liver. A common Scottish tale is the story of nine children lured onto a Kelpie’s back, while a tenth kept his distance. The Kelpie chased the tenth child, but he escaped. Another more gruesome variation on this tale is that the tenth child simply stroked the Kelpie’s nose but, when his hand stuck to it, he took a knife from his pocket and cut his own hand off, cauterizing it with wood from a nearby fire. The child saves himself but is unable to help his friends, as they are pulled underwater with the Kelpie.” Kelpie: There was a warm wind with the high tide on the south of the hill. When a young girl went a-walking and I followed with a will. "Good day to you, my fine young lady, with your lips so sweetly full. May I help you comb your long hair, sweep it from that brow so cool?" Up, ride with the kelpie. I'll steal your soul to the deep. If you don't ride with me while the devil's free I'll ride with somebody else. Well I'm a man when I'm feeling the urge to step ashore. So I may charm you not alarm you. Tell you all fine things, and more. Up, ride with the kelpie. I'll steal your soul to the deep. If you don't ride with me while the devil's free I'll ride with somebody else. Say goodbye to all your dear kin for they hate to see you go in your young prime, to this place of mine in the still loch far below. Up, ride with the kelpie. I'll steal your soul to the deep. If you don't ride with me while the devil's free I'll ride with somebody else. Up, ride with the kelpie. I'll steal your soul to the deep. If you don't ride with me while the devil's free I'll ride with somebody else.

Love the list. I may take these, make a playlist and use it for times when I need it.
I too, am affected by music "How about a little light music, to take it all away"
And I too, am full of gripes and also run hot or cold.
I would think the upbeat music would qualify, instrumentals like Holly Herald, which, it's hard to be in a bad mood with that playing. Someone else mentioned The Christmas Album, most are happy, I'd say First Snow isn't though.
How about Moths? Anyone else say that? There's am argument about whether it's about hope or it's a love song sort of in disguise.

The Klepie lyrics seems so happy, but they are not happy at all, but it's a happy tune... Strange... I almost always get in a happier mood, listening to Tull... I wonder why that is? Great place this Jethro Tull Board! The first time I listened to Jethro Tull was in 1980, or was it 1979? Anyway... At that time all of my friends were listening to Jethro Tull. I was about 16 years old, and every where I went, they listened to Jethro Tull. And then almost simultaneously, they stooped listening to Tull? So I haven't had anyone to talk to about this obsession, for years lol Sounds pretty sad... Maybe Ian could write a song about that? (Just kidding) So the board is a good thing. Bostock

Personally I've always found Black Satin Dancer to be a sort of bittersweet song, not necessarily happy, but a sort of heavy song, accepting the pain and moving on sort of thing. Beautiful lyrics nonetheless--it could make someone feel happy! Love the list. I may take these, make a playlist and use it for times when I need it. I too, am affected by music "How about a little light music, to take it all away" And I too, am full of gripes and also run hot or cold. Interesting, Going over the lyrics that's a good question. It's certainly a happy sort of song. In terms of whether it's a love song or a song about hope, it really could be both. There are definite references to a romantic relationship. "And we'll all burn together as the wick grows higher --- before the candle's dead." Perhaps this lyric describes the "flame of love" that burns before the two lovers eventually grow disinterested in each other? It does feel like this is a song about a romantic night between two lovers to me. Which does seem like a happy sort of thing. The melody is happy nonetheless. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

I think you're spot on. Being that I can never be a grouch if Moths is on and it's just about my favorite song I love to dissect the essence of it. The melody is happy I'd say and soothing if nothing else.

Here's our updated list of "postive" Tull songs. Let me get this straight though. It doesn't matter what the lyrics as long as the music makes you feel good right? Reminds me of a few Red Hot Chili Pepper & Alanis Morrisette songs.

Yes, definitely.
About the songs. I don't know. I thought yes at first. But if we say it's only how it makes you feel, seems that could be a slippery slope. What if someone said those bitch and moan songs I mentioned make them happy? I would say....liar! No, but I would say, well, those really aren't the happy and positive songs I was looking for.

Please elaborate Holly, I'm afraid your post made me a bit confused.
Paul, The Whistler is a great addition--certainly a song of hope--a man who has done wrong, only to redeem himself by spreading cheer through gifts of song.

I was answering TM's question about 'does any song qualify for this type of list as long as it personally makes you happy' I was referring to having my doubts about that.
I was just ordering something online and for some reason this thread popped into my head and I almost wrote 'Herald' as my last name, lol.
