Can there be any doubt that Thijs is the second greatest flutist in rock? In addition to flute he plays a weird instrument at 3:38, identified by Youtube fans as a Hohner Melodica. And the guitarist does a three minute solo starting at around 6:50 that will knock your socks off:

Here, Thijs is featured prominently on flute with Uriah Heep...great flute work...plus he adds his trademark yodeling toward the end. These Heep guys seem to love the sound of a flute, whether it be Ian or Thijs, accompanying their music. Can you blame them?

Here, a much younger, much thinner Thijs plays flute for only about ten or eleven seconds at around the three minute mark, but this rare video is also notable for his yodeling, cartoon-chattering and whistling, as well as the sheer energy of the band. With Jan Akkerman on guitar. Jeff

Thanks for posting it...what's the name of the song, and is it on a studio album?

You should check out Dungen, a modern Swedish band with progressive-leanings that also features a keyboard player that plays occasional flute (different in style from Tull or Focus, but really good).... I saw them perform recently and enjoyed the show alot, and you might enjoy them as well.....Mike

I am going to be posting some more stuff by them in the next few days, and I will definitely check out Dungen as well! Jeff

Not sure what albums they are from, but it appears they are from two different ones; according to the information given on youtube, Tamara's Move is the more recent song, whereas House of the King is a Focus classic. We will continue our focus on Focus for the next few days, before moving on to our next, still-to-be-determined flutist. Here are Early Birth, Birth and Love Remembered, all with very nice flutework from this week's featured flutist, Thijs Van Leer :

Here Thijs plays flute on a great instrumental piece with German guitarist Thomas Blug, ex-Tull keyboardist Don Airey, and Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice. Thijs has a two minute flute solo starting at the 4:53 minute mark.

Okay, I will leave you with these two final vids of Focus before we move on to the next flutist. The first is Thijs Van Leer playing flute with Dutch U2 cover band, Crystal Dream, on the song 'Desire' :
This last one is described by a Youtube fan as sounding " like Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Yes and Rush all mixed together, with some blues too." And, of course, several tasty flute solos from Thijs :
Stayed tuned for Peter Gabriel, our next "Flutist of the Week," here on The Jethro Tull Board.

Focus always put on a great show these days. I have seen them about three times in the last two years. Thys is great and a real character.Plays some mean flute live .The band always make apoint of chatting with fans and sharing a drink after each show. The wonderful guitar player in the current incarnation of Focus is Niels van der Steenhoven. to my ears every bit as good as Jan Akkerman
