The Knife, from the second Genesis album, Trespass, is one of the most popular early Genesis songs. In this live vid from 1973, Peter Gabriel kisses the flute, almost as if he is saying a prayer, then advances to the microphone and holds the instrument high over his head, as if it were a holy symbol, before launching into the ninety second flute intro. Probably the hardest rocking Genesis song ever. Look for a very young Phil Collins on drums and backing vocals:

In the formative years of Genesis, Peter Gabriel played flute as a guest on Cat Stevens' album Mona Bone Jakon. His flute can be heard in the background, starting from the one minute mark, and throughout the remainder of the song, on Katmandu:

Twilight Alehouse is a rare early Genesis track from their Archives box set, which I downloaded from Itunes about a year ago, but completely forgot about. In this 1972 performance of the song, a fresh-faced Peter Gabriel puffs out a flute solo from 2:54 to 4:35 :

Peter Gabriel may look like Charlie Chaplin in this video from 1973, but he's really just a lawnmower; you can tell him by the way he walks. Here is I Know What I Like (in your Wardrobe), with fifty seconds of flute frolicking from Peter, beginning at 4:30 :

Here Peter puffs the platinum pipe for about 45 seconds in The Fountains of Salamis, an early Genesis classic from their mesmerizing 1971 Nursery Cryme album:
We'll shine our spotlight on Peter Gabriel one last day tomorrow before moving onward to our next featured flutist.

This is a video excerpt of the reunion concert in 2000 of Supersister, one of the first Dutch prog bands. Shortly before the unexpected death of Sasha, the flautist. Without him this super band cannot exist anymore unfortunately.
. ........and here is the original from 1971:

I am totally unfamiliar with this band, but will definitely check them out and feature them here on this Flutist of the Week thread! First I've got one or two more to go with Peter Gabriel and for next week I was all set to do spotlight Roland Kirk, so after Kirk we will feature Sasha! Jeff

We cannot possibly feature Peter Gabriel without also including Supper's Ready, the early Genesis's all-time greatest masterpiece, their 'Brick' if you will. So I will leave you with this stunning, nine minute live excerpt, in which Peter wears a flower-head, shakes his ass (4:36-4:42), plays some beautiful flute (6:56-8:18) and does all kinds of other crazy shit :
Peter Gabriel's flute mainly occurred in the very early Genesis, 1970-1973. By the time of the Lamb tour, his flute-playing was diminished, and I believe he quit the flute altogether not too long after leaving Genesis, as I do not believe there is much, if any, flute on any of his solo albums.
Next up here on Flutist of the Week: Roland Kirk
