Waiting for old aces to arrive I'm looking forward to hearing that, although I haven't ordered the box yet. Amazing how nobody knew about that song for all these years. I'm hoping someone will put it on youtube soon, until I have a chance to buy this. Let us know how you like it, when it arrives. (Toby, I thought you'd be interested to know I just saw Midnight Oil in New York City on Mother's Day. Could not believe how great they still are....it's like they never disbanded at all. I read that they had five months of rehearsals before the tour and rehearsed all 170 songs in their catalogue. They have so far rotated about 80 or 90 songs into their setlists, playing different shows every night. I am guessing you will probably see them in Australia later this year.) Jeff

Jeff I quite like some Oils songs from the late 70s. They had good compositions in the 80s too although the 80s sound wasn't the best

One brown mouse sounds different from the version on Too old. Is that correct? I like Working John better from this set.

Ah, well, a see a glimmer of light around here yet. Gosh, it has been a spell. So, Hello again. And so, the 40th Anniversary edition of SFTW has been spinning on my spiny thingies and I'm liking what I hear and see. First off, the remix has awakened some before buried sounds that either weren't there are weren't totally discerned, even from the re-master. Two things first jump out immediately. One, this was one cracking lineup. Well, we knew that, but it really was a tight outfit and the performances were really stellar. And second of all, there is a lot of Martin and Dave on this one from a compositional standpoint - this is really evident now that I re listen to it all. Great extra tracks, in particular, Old Aces Die Hard. Pure heyday Tull this one. I can see how it got left off as it is in some way more of the "Passion/Warchild" sounding era, but in some ways, not so different from a few things we are hearing even today from Ian. The concert footage is great, even if the video is a bit dodgy at times, and the sound .... Well, you can hear everything, but I don't know why there wasn't some ambience added in. I really tire of hearing that 70s era dry mix that live albums got back in the day, and that's what we have here. The CD of the show is a much better mix for some reason. Plenty of reading material included as well, with memories from all connected. Overall, a goodly package, a good remix, and a fine effort. I can't compare this one to the forerunners, as this is the only one I've gotten ("Songs" being my favorite of the lot). but it has taken me down memory lane and given me more Tull time of late than I've given them in several years. Five stars.
Saw Martin in Nashville in April. Great show. Loud as heck, and I know loud. Good thing I brought along my musicians earplugs. Great to get to see drummer Jon Joseph live too. Martin scored big with that addition. Okay, enough of this, got to go let the cat out. Hope all are doing well. See you again in a couple years perhaps. Tally-Ho ... .. . .

Mine just came in the mail from Amazon. No one's home right now....and I didn't order it. I am assuming it is a Father's Day present I wasn't supposed to know about. Unfortunately, the box is ripped open now and the plastic is off. I'll live with the repercussions.

Gave it a listen yesterday and this morning. There's a compressed feel to the sound that I find irritating, but I feel that way about all digitization. I do enjoy the better separation of the individual instruments (like in the "Pibroch" instrumental section, for instance).
"Old Aces Die Hard" is nice to hear, although I can see why it never made it on an album -- a bit too busy, but the chorus section is memorable. I do like the pre-Heavy Horses version of "One Brown Mouse" and the less ornate original recording of "Solstice Bells" ("Magic Bells"). I never liked "Strip Cartoon" and this remix didn't change that. One of those throw-away songs like "Glory Road" I simply skip while listening. I can also see why it took several albums for "Working John, Working Joe" to finally end up on an album, because it really doesn't fit with any of the material on SFTW, HH or Storm Watch.
I will be listening to the live material this evening. Geeze, it's late afternoon already? Where did the weekend go?
Overall, a very nice remix and a worthwhile expense. The documentary material is first rate.

I preferred "Rainbow Blues" of the unreleased stuff from that period (finally ended up on M.U., but probably should've bumped another song off War Child).

Good godmother, March the mad scientist and Glory row would be my first choices to replace songs on Warchild. Rainbow blues is pretty cool too

Somewhat disappointed by this expensive purchase. Most the other Steven Wilson remixes of Jethro Tull works were provided in lossless 5.1 HD audio, but the band or Ian dont seem to have the respect for the piece to provide the 5.1 in lossless HD audio. Especially this recording, one of the best recorded. Do they fear that it could out shine the other recordings in this package. Gonna milk us for a high res DTS master audio Bluray purchase in the future.🤔

I just listened to the 96khz 24bit stereo remix. The bit rate is 3 times the bit rate of the 5.1 and the highs and sibilants are definitely sweeter, even though Im listeneing to extended stereo which uses all 5.1 speakers.
