Let's start our study of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, with this look at 'The Whistleman' playing flute for the animals at the zoo! Check out how they react to his "serenading."
More Kirk to follow in the week ahead!

Kirk was blind, but it didn't stop him from being virtually a one-man band. Here he is on flute, then three saxophones at once, then starting at 0:41, a great stuttering flute solo, with some whistle thrown in for good measure!
This one was too good to wait.

Roland Kirk played at the 1962 Newport Jazz Festival, which Ian may well have seen or heard as a 15 year-old budding musician. Kirk's grunting, sputtering flute style, which can be found here for 70 seconds starting at 1:16, obviously was a huge influence on Young Master Ian. As a youtube fan astutely observes, "Roland Kirk was Thijs Van Leer's and Ian Anderson's flute father" :

In 1959, at a little restaurant in Amersfoort, Holland, RRK was recorded performing 'Lover Man,' a five-and-a-half minute piece in which he plays flute, flute and nothing but flute. Ian Anderson was 12 years old at the time.

Okay, so here's one more from Roland, before we "roll on" to some more flutists. This one is called Making Love After Hours, and it's from Norway in 1967. As Rollie says while introducing this number "we all know what 'Love' is....it's 'Evol' spelled backwards" : I think what all these RRK flute vids show is that Roland's style of playing the flute was a tremendous influence on Ian's own flute-playing, more so than Ian has ever admitted, especially on the earlier stuff like This Was and Stand Up, but even now. For some reason though, Ian has always downplayed Roland as an influence. Next up on Flutist of the Week: Miscellaneous flutists of interest. Jeff
