With 22 concert visits since high school in 1971, I have enjoyed traveling up to 7 hours for Tull concerts enjoying all. I am sure 22 is not a record, but would be curious of frequency of other listers and maybe a favorite tour. I fondly remember a friend who originally hosted the early Jethro Tull website in the 90's with direct communication with tour manager and provided us free tickets to Tull in Chicago, and a meet with Andy Giddings. Thanks

I fondly remember a friend who originally hosted the early Jethro Tull website in the 90's with direct communication with tour manager and provided us free tickets to Tull in Chicago, and a meet with Andy Giddings. Thanks Hey, Bkasl, nice debut post! 22 Tull shows is quite a lot...we've got folks here with as few as one or two and as many as 120+. But what's important is not # of shows, but rather what Tull has meant to you over the years, the lyrics, your stories, thoughts and opinions, that's what counts, and also what you're most personally meaningful songs are. We are big into examining all of Ian's work, the music and words, from all sorts of various angles and we like to have some fun with it! Personally, my favorite tours were Songs from the Wood, which was my first, then Stormwatch and after that I loved the A and Rock Island tours, as well as Roots to Branches. Since you've been attending shows since 1971, you've seen a few tours that I which I could have, but I didn't even discover Tull until 1975! Very cool that you got to meet Andrew Giddings, what a nice guy. I was so sorry to see him out of Tull, but I have a feeling that he could be back at some point. I don't know what the early Tull website was like in the 1990's because I was a latecomer to the internet...didn't even get access until 2001, which is when I discovered the various Tull discussion forums. Enjoy the site here, BK, we look forward to your contributions! Jeff

Favourites: In Niagara Falls NY there was a two level stage, with Anderson above the band and lighted so that it seemed that the WarChild album cover came to life.

21 for me (including Ian solos).
1972 April 15 Ithaca, NY 1973 May 16 Hershey, PA 1973 August 28 New York, NY (MSG) 1975 February 27 Hershey, PA 1977 March 28 Boston Garden, MA 1980 October 28 Kansas City 1996 September 14 Bonner Springs, KS 1998 July 18 Kansas City 1998 August 30 San Diego, CA 1999 September 12 St Louis, MO 2000 June 15 Biloxi, MS 2002 May 4 Tunica, MS 2003 August 20 Pittsburgh, PA 2003 October 9 Kansas City, MO 2004 November 21 Indiana, PA 2005 November 18 Kansas City, MO 2006 July 30 Boston, MA 2006 October 20 Greensburg, PA 2007 October 12 Kansas City, MO 2008 August 12 Red Rocks, CO 2009 October 17 Red Bank, NJ
My favorite remains the first in 1972, the Thick as a Brick tour, where the band came out and played the entire TAAB along with costume changes, rabbits, Mike Nelson, telephones, etc. 45 minutes later TAAB was over, the audience was blown away and Ian stepped to the mike and matter of factly said, "For our second number we will play something from the Aqualung album" and went into Cross Eyed Mary. I was hooked for life.

21 for me (including Ian solos). 1998 August 30 San Diego, CA Skip down to the appropriate date: www.cidanka.nl/keneally/98gigs.htmHey. I was at that show too. That was the one time I got to see Tull from the wings. I was in hog heaven then because Mike Keneally and Beer For Dolphins (the opening act) was my other favorite band of all time. I used to work for Mike as a band assistant and later on did some recording that ended up on one of his albums. That period was a peak period for me and MK/BFD. One day as their tour swung through SD (hometown to both Mike K and me), I told him I needed to get to see Tull. Somehow I got down to Humphrey's with a "rental" keyboard or some drums or something and was let in and got an all access pass. It was the first time I got to meet members of Tull. I talked at some length to Martin, Dave, Andy and Doane before the show. (Martin told me about the Dave Mattacks dismissal from Fairport Convention just a while earlier.) There was a tune that Mike Keneally's band played that wrapped up their show. During that song, Day of the Cow, Ian was standing just in front of me with a growing grin on his face. Day of the Cow is one of Mike's more Zappa-esque moments with an ending that has a whole-band rhythmic unison extravaganza based around the staccato vocal. It is far from a foot tapper. You know it or you don't. So there is Ian A, watching this thing go on with a shit eating grin on his face, and he's talking to whoever his crew guy is at the monitor desk or wherever. Months later, I find out that Jason Harrison Smith, the drummer in BFD, got a call from Ian asking about if he'd come and play on some demos and solo work. Jason was a sort of cocky, sometimes sharp-tongued guy of about 29 at the time, and really flamboyant. His kits often changed. One day he had a jellybean themed kit and pink hair, and another he had rainbow nail polish and a bigger than life kick drum and piccolo snare with monster cymbals or something. Interesting fellow. Well, his brand of individualism probably cost him what was going to be his best gig yet. Word got to me some time later that after flying to England and cutting Tull demos for what became Dot Com, and for cutting tracks on what became Secret Language of Birds, he got the axe in a hurry. Apparently he smarted off to Ian about what would be good or not and Ian wasn't having it. That was the end of that romance, I guess. Now you can look at those albums and not see a trace of his name (IIRC). Later on he found other work with Patrick Leonard of Madonna, Toy Matinee and Jewel fame. www.facebook.com/people/Jason-Harrison-Smith/1064971379

I can remember, in order, without much stressing, every gig i saw from 1973 thru 1992...after light music, when the 25 year tour went on for a few years...or loner, with slight changes...and touring, for the most part, was disconnected from releases, I have lost track and would need to spend some time at the ministry to get an estimate. her is what i remember:
1973: Denver 1975: El Paso, Cleveland 1976: Denver 1977: Cleveland, Boston, New Haven, Dayton 1978: Detroit 1979: Oakland 1980:Dortmund, Hamburg 1982:Oakland, Stockton 1984:San Francisco, Los Angeles 1987: Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt, Essen, Koln 1988;Mountain View, Concord, Irvine, San Diego 1989: London, Hamburg, Essen, Zurich, Milan 1991: Chicago, Grand Rapids, Davis 1992: San francisco, Seattle.
so thats at least 36 ( some of the above sities included more than one night...) since then I have probably seen Tull/ Ian solo at least another 40 times, if not more....I mean, they tour a lot......I better spend some time at the ministry and with my ticket stubs to get a more accurate estimate...I bet I'm not too, too far below 100 gigs at this point. From a geographic nerds point of view I can say, for sure, i have seen Tull at least once in the following countries and states:
USA, England, Germany, Switzerland, Italy.
Colorado, Ohio, California, Arizona, Washington, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois and Texas
in my home state, i have seen Tull at: San Francisco, Daly City, Mountain View, Concord, Berkeley, Oakland, San Rafael, Sta Rosa, Stockton, Modesto, San Jose, Fresno, Los Angeles, San Diego, Irvine and Davis.

Impressive list, Paul. I've got to do that myself one day. We have been to a lot of the same shows. I missed that July 2000 show at the Beacon though, because of my honeymoon in Italy.
So when we returned, I shlepped my wife up to Buffalo for a second honeymoon two weeks later, since she had never been to Niagara Falls, but more importantly so we could see Tull at the Erie County Fair!

There seems to be many users on this board who have seen very many amazing performances that I can only have dreamed of seeing. I am only 18 years old, and have not been alive for the majority of Tull's life. I have been to one show, on December 3rd, 2007 In Gaithersburg, MD. It was really great. There were three guest violinists for this show. Ian seemed to be in very good spirits, and Martin Barre and Doane Perry were in top form (no question). Funny enough, I happen to be wearing the shirt I purchased (at a rather large price) from the show right now. It is my favorite shirt and the one I wear most often. I would have liked to see Ian on his most recent tour, but funds were insufficient (being in NYC at the time, the beacon theater being way too expensive). But I hope to and expect to see Tull in the future, especially if they add some new dates to next years US tour?
