I've always admired Ian's discipline and productive use of his time. For Chrissakes the guy not only has recorded a ton of music and played three thousand shows over the years, but he has also run a successful salmon farming business, and I believe he still manages many acres of farmland on Skye. He also handles all the tour planning and financing himself, along with Shona, and goes out of his way to help aspiring musicians. Then there are all the hobbies: motorcycles, guns, cameras, chile peppers, wild cats, as well as charitable causes he is involved with. And isn't he the leading spokesman for Deep Vein Thrombosis awareness as well? As if all that were not enough he gives interviews and paints and sculpts in his free time, and you know he reads a ton. I would bet his television watching is limited to a few minutes of CNN per day and that's about it. Knowing him, he would probably regard what we are doing here as a grand waste of time. (I would not agree with him on that, though.) The guy is like a freakin' machine. I don't do shit compared to that. Jeff

and he's probably banging a ton of chicks... I doubt that because Shona watches him like a hawk! Jeff

On the topic of Shona...you know she gets credit for Ian's accomplishments as well...I get the impression they are an enviable team and support each other in their ambitious pursuits. Not to take away credit....but i kinda imagine....not from experience, that once you have the money to clar away a lot of daily tasks and bullshit, you have the luxury of pointing your energy at real work....I think ian and Shona have plenty of 'people' they trust....i wonder if they need an aging bike messenger around the farm.

Have you met her, Bernie? Although I've met Ian several times I only met her once or twice. Seems like a bit of a tough cookie. Jeff

Hard to imagine Shona as a tough cookie as I still picture her from the dance scenes from A Passion Play.

We professional Tull pests THOUGHT Gerd was tough...but he was replaced as tour manager/prime Ian protector (left guard) by Kenny Wylie...nicknamed 'NO' by those of us who found him tougher than Gerd...then Shona got (or demanded) the job of tour manager/ Ian prtotector and we missed good old frinedly, nice, reasonable, kenny Wylie. Shona lays down the law before anyone else opens their mouths: how much time Ian will devote to fans...and a strict one item each to be autographed. Most of ian's bizness is now conducted via rental car window, with Shona at the wheel, ready to drive off when the allotted fan time is reached. James D has had some tour manager/ ian protector duties...he's a pretty soft touch...friendly, truly willing to research claims of fans stating their cases for special attention but, as time goes by, harder and harder to fool.

don't know much about his music management but nothing but praise from his workers on Strathaird farm in the old days I have read the same thing, i.e., that Ian was well-liked and respected by his employees in the salmon farming industry. And we heard the same thing from the locals when we visited Skye in 1993. Jeff

don't know much about his music management but nothing but praise from his workers on Strathaird farm in the old days I enjoyed listening to Ian describe the local work ethic in the 'Fish & Sheep' video. "You might do a bit of 'this' in the morning or you might not, or you might do a bit of 'that' or you might not..."

Ian certainly is a busy guy. He seems like he has a lot of energy he needs to put to use, and thank the lord he has found productive ways to use them (unlike many other rock "stars").
As far as Shona goes, I've never met her, or anyone from Tull for that matter, but I imagine someone who could stay with Ian for so long has to be a hell of a character, and a firm one at that. Ian has a very strong personality, especially in the late 70s when they married. I imagine it would be hard to survive a conversation with that guy (when he's in a certain mood), let alone decades of marriage (though I'm sure Ian is a really nice guy).
