Out of curiousity, I went searching on the internet for a photograph of Preston Platform, and was surprised to learn that there is no such railway station still in existence. In fact, it was shut down almost 100 years ago, in 1914, and has been bricked up ever since. So, it would have been impossible for Ian to catch a train ride home from Preston Platform in his 'cheap day return.' I think we need some information from our UK members to clear up this Tull mystery. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preston,_Devon en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disused_railway_stations_(Newton_Abbot_to_Kingswear_Line)Jeff P.S. Does anyone have any other Tull mysteries that need to be solved?

Preston is a city in Northern England Jeff, same county as Blackpool so I would assume that is the Preston Ian refers to. Ian doesn't have any connection with Devon apart from Martin living there. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preston

Right, Jim, you live in Preston, Lancashire which obviously has an active railway station. Mix has cleared up my confusion as to the two Prestons, because a few days ago when I googled 'Preston Platform' the only thing that came up was the old station by that name in Devon, near Preston Sands, which has not been used since 1914, and has been blocked up. So I was thinking, wait a minute, how could that be in view of the song? What I didn't realize is that there are two Prestons, and the one you live in is, I take it, a fairly large city. Still like the idea of a 'Tull Mysteries' thread, because there has got to be more of them! Jeff

Thank you, Geir, for all those excellent photos of the various platforms that comprise the Preston railway station. I think they must cover every inch of the place, including the exact spot where Ian brushed away the cigarette ash from his pants!
