Man, I luved that year. I did did some YouTubing and it brought back great mems. I know I've mentioned it b4 but I think the "Roots" album is brilliant! Lyrically some of Ian's best. And there was something real special for me at those Beacon Theater shows. Ian has such a breezy, free-flowing perf, not encumbered by anything. How i LOVED the mic right on his mouth as he moved effortlessly around the stage and easily going from vocal to flute in a nanosecond.Plus, he could actually take his guitar off and not stop singing. It was beautiful, Altho I'm in the minority, to me Tull was just as dynamic in 1995 as ever. And what a fuckin great year fror. "Divinities", then a few mos. later, "Roots". Sure, the album dide nada in the charts. but it's one of my faves.

Loved the Roots shows (the songs sounded better live than they did on record, even WO &T, a song I hated on the album, but liked live, same goes for At Last Forever). That album, like Rock Island, was just made to be performed live. First set consisted of eight of the 11 songs from the new album....the last true album tour. Jeff

Yes, Jeff. Exactly. A great new album tour. I know they began the show w/ the title cut, and played so much of the album. Check ouy the videos. Ahhh........them days are long over...I'd much rather (and will!) live w/ the vids. I will NEVER EVER go to another show, while I still have some self-esteem.

Hey Tommy, I agree that the album and the tour were really brilliant! Actually, this is my favorite tull-period: the songs and Ian's stage performance (with the earobic-headset ) were excellent. And last but not least: you can hear the important (and very inspired) input of Doane, Martin and Andy on the album and tour... Check out the bootlegs: 'Santiago','Curious Riff' and 'The Velvet Flute'... I can't get enough of these live-recordings... Stijn

Agreed, Occasion! Thanx for that term "earobic headset"; I never knew what to call it. And, yes, I esp dug Andy and Jon, actually, as the "new guy" Again, that earobic headset seemed so perfect for Ian.......dont know why he never used it again.
But then again, I loved his sax playing on the PP and WC tours........and he never used them again either. Such a powerful addition, I felt. See ya.

I sawI saw both shows in Boston and I thought it was amazing how well the band sounded and how tight they were. I thought Roots is an album that is the top tier of Ian's and the bands works.

Stijn You can say that again....the Roots to Branches shows were superb, the last truly great Tull tour! In fact, I just got through listening to the opening night of that tour, Boston 1995, and it just absolutely knocked my socks off! Jeff

I began my Tull-journey in 1992, just missing Catfish. So Roots was MY first fresh brand-new Tull-music. I can remember liking it upon first listen. In fact, I spotlighted "Rare And Precious Chain" (as well as "Light" from Wrapped in Sky by Drivin' N' Cryin') on the 18 Oct 1995 edition of my college 'radio' show at CSULB, as standout tracks from CDs I'd recently bought. (Eek, just realized I haven't played it in quite a while. I should do that.)
So a little over a month later I was at the (then) Universal Ampitheater the day after Thanksgiving for my second Tull show ever. (The first was Sep 1993 at the (then) Irvine Meadows.) Sadly we arrived late and missed the very beginning. (Which was par for the course with the person I invited. Ugh.) My memories of the actual show are dim, but I'm sure we enjoyed it. As was my habit at the time, I scribbled a setlist (the best I could in the dark) on a hotel notepad. There was only one title I either didn't hear or comprehend its name. Now I know that it's Martin's tune "Misère".
At the end of the show, something else happened on the way out the doors. But I'll save that for another story.
Recently I've found In The Grip Of Universal City that claims to be from this night, but it's got to be from the night after (or some other show). Because just my luck, our tickets were for a night with no 'Brick', as it is not notated on my list *pout*. And it's included on this set, so it's not what I heard. But it will do for a "close-enough".
