I've been away this week but reading the board daily via blackberry. Great discussions going on here, and welcome to all new members (proper welcomes to follow), it's hard to post using this device, though. But what you are about to read couldn't wait!
Here's the big news that we just heard from one of our members, Rusty, who has received very reliable information (think: horse's mouth) that 2012 will see a Martin Barre Band Tour, with some special guests of Martin's own (Dave Pegg!) and that the tour will include Tull classics, Martin's own work and other original material.
We've invited Rusty to provide further details here, and hopefully he will be posting in this thread soon! Thanks for this 'exclusive' to The Jethro Tull Board, Rusty!

Great news again! Glad you are okay and able to communicate. I feel better about this too since I never got to see Martin as a solo act. I will be thrilled to hear more details as they develop. This makes another show for me to see. Dear Martin: Thomas Wolfe Auditorium Asheville, North Carolina 2012.... I Pledge Allegiance, To the Bands.........

Great, two different interpretations of Tull under the guise of solo act,if I was a paranoid person would wonder about the future of Tull as a band either recording or playing again, hopefully get this solo out of their systems and at least one final this is it tour, once again, glad I made the opening at Red Rocks, may have been my last Tull show.I would look at this as good news if say done earlier and then a get together for TAAB,really not good news in my eyes at all.

That is great news Jeff. I can only hope they would come over to the states. Martin and Peggy playing Tull together and not with Ian sure says alot. It would be great to see both of them again. Imagine they grab Barrimore for drums. Now that's a band. They could do just instrumentulls and would be the show of the decade.

I'm kinda in this camp. Its like Waters splitting from Floyd... and them both touring simultaneously. Or Yes splitting from Jon Anderson... and them both hitting the road playing the same music at the same time. I can see Martin doing his own thing. But putting together a band... that will also play Tull...with former Tull alumni... while Ian is touring Thick as a Brick? I don't know. None of that sounds right to me. Not the 2012 I was looking for from any of them.

After careful review, I deleted the Blues Brothers post to make sure Ian or Martin would not turn into the "Blues Brothers". It would have been interesting as a movie only. If we all realize how important it is not to over think the announcement with the clock ticking, this could turn out well on many levels. I for one feel just as much a Tull fan even when someone does a solo tour. This year could be outstanding no matter happens between Ian and Martin. I never worried when these guys did solo tours before. Hell, I love all the solo albums too. Now it's another chapter in music that has so much more. I really love watching Martin and Florian. If it makes sense to do 2 separate tours, then let's dig it. I will try to beg once again for Ian and Martin to both visit beautiful Asheville next year. It is great that Martin is still hungry enough to tour on his own.

Martin & Peggy, now that will be cool. I recall in the Q&A asking Martin if he ever got frustrated with the lack of new material from Ian. Didn't get an answer, I guess that says it all. As much as I'd love to see Martin do the Brick tour with Ian, I'd much rather see him doing something new instead of living in the past.

A while back, Peggy and PJ Wright did an acoustic show ON A BOAT in this area. Which I sadly missed. Martin and Peggy is indeed cool; Martin and Peggy on a boat would totally rock [no pun intended]. And what the heck - sign up Tony Banks for keyboards.

The information we received from TJTB member Rusty, about a 2012 Martin Barre tour (apparently to include Dave Pegg) is reliable, and here's why:
Rusty is from Jackson, Mississippi, same town as Julie Barre and her family. I am not sure if he knows Martin personally (I think he might) but, in any event, a month or so ago, following the conclusion of the US Tull tour, Rusty met Martin at the Bright Lights festival in Jackson, where Martin and Julie were visiting her family. Rusty posted a photo of himself with Martin taken at the festival, and subsequently informed us that "reliable sources say to look for a Martin Barre Band tour in 2012 (with Dave Pegg?!?!)....Tull classics, original material,, etc."
So, it would appear that his "reliable source" was Martin himself. Rusty later cautioned that he heard nothing about a new Martin solo album, only the tour, but left unanswered so far is whether the tour will be limited to the U.K. (as seems likely) or will include other countries. My feeling is that if there are any U.S. dates, they will be limited to a handful of major cities and tHat's all, but I will try to learn more.

I really hope this happens. It seems that a lot of what Jethro Tull has been doing has come to a stand still, creatively speaking. Perhaps seperate tours (which may or may not be drastically different) both comprised of Tull and Tull-related material that is not so commonly brought to the stage can bring about a lot of inspiration in these old geezers yet! It's interesting that Ian put his name alongside Tull's name on the website now. Perhaps including Martin Barre as much as he has been isn't so much of a focus anymore? Either way, Barre has proven that he can find success in other mediums, and I think the two, after this long, would be in the end inseperable.

i cant help but thinkin Tull pulling Floyds here. But im trying to look this positive way, Which makes this all sound guite interesting. Both playing Tull material makes me interested to hear how different they will make them sound. But I hope they will just get back touring togethere as Tull after this... And make that new album we are all eager off.

New album would be awesome, but it would be really awesome if it was super-creative and inspired, instead some sort of have-a-go at profit-making disc distribution.
If things all of a sudden seem different due to Tull stirring stuff up, that means things are happening, which I am for.
And I am totally in favor of keeping Barre with Ian and Tull.

Hi Ulla, I don't think there is an announcement of a tour here, it's reportage, some may say gossip, some may say speculation, but it is something that as a fan base we put out so as to fill the gap around the poor level of detail sometimes put out by the band's official channels at times. In fact Jeff does say, we will try to find out more. The source may well be very accurate, I mean how many times have we heard 'exclusives' from sources outside of the formal channels of the band which are later proven to be not only correct but much more detailed than the official sources themselves. One case in point being the announcement of the guests on the Canterbury Christmas gig, we had that story and the poster way in advance of any official notification by the band or their reps.

Jeff So somebody from the same town as Martin Barre´s wife is a reliable source to announce a Martin Barre Band tour? You must be joking! No, I'm not joking Ulla, and honestly, I really don't get your hostility. It must be because I mentioned something about Martin's wife, Julie, and her family being from Jackson, Mississippi. You've got a thing with that, I know, but guess what....there's an article on Martin's own website called Living with the Present, where Martin talks about having met Julie in her home town of Jackson, and also talks about Julie in general, as well as their children. The information about Julie Barre being from Jackson appears on the Tull website, as well. It's public knowledge. You obviously did not read my post very carefully, because I spelled out the reasons why I considered Rusty's report to be reliable, and it's not simply because he is from Julie's hometown. The guy is an attorney in Jackson, and although I am not quite certain about this, it appears as though he knows Julie's family. I say this because there are several pictures of him with Martin on his FB page, including a recent one from a month or two ago. He indicated that the recent photo of himself with Martin was taken at a festival called Bright Waters, while Martin was visiting family in the area, and I confirmed via an internet search that there is such a festival held each summer in Jackson. It made perfect sense that Martin and Julie would be in Jackson to visit her family, because the U.S. Tull tour had just ended in late June. What better time to visit her family? Tull were already in the U.S., and it's likely that Julie accompanied Martin on the tour. When the controversial "countdown clock" expired last week, and the only real news was bad (i.e., that Martin is not going to be included in the "Full Brick" tour), there were a lot of fans on FB who were angry and disappointed that it's going to be an IA show and not a Tull show with Martin. A lot of discussions were going on, and during the course of these discussions, Rusty posted what he had heard from "reliable sources" about a 2012 Martin Barre Band tour, possibly to include Dave Pegg. He didn't make any extravagant claims about Martin releasing a new solo album, and did not even mention whether the tour would include the U.S. So putting two and two together, it seems quite likely that Rusty had heard this from Martin himself, since he had recently met Martin in Jackson, and apparently has met him on prior occasions as well. I found this information to be very plausible. After all, Martin has gone on a previous solo tour about six or seven years ago, and that tour happened to include the U.S., and featured some former members of Tull. Moreover, the fact that Martin is not going to be included in next year's Brick tour may well be explained by the fact that he is unavailable due to his own solo projects, including a tour. So it all fits together. As Pat noted, we are not "announcing" a Martin Barre tour, rather we are reporting on what one of our members heard, after we investigated his claim to the best of our ability, and found his story to be credible. The Jethro Tull Board is a fan-operated community website, where we place great emphasis on what Tull fans have to say. If one of our members who has just met Martin says that he heard from a "reliable source" that Martin will be touring next year, we believe that he did in fact hear that, and in this case it's not much of a leap to assume that he heard it from Martin himself. There is absolutely no motive whatsoever for any sane person to go on FB and make a false claim that he had heard something that he really did not hear. Do you have any information that contradicts what he said? I get the feeling that you do not, otherwise you would have mentioned it. I also get the feeling that perhaps you don't like the fact that someone else heard some inside information before you did. Jeff

While we are talking about a likely Martin Barre Band tour for next year, let's not forget what Martin said on his website in 2009, which lends even more credibility to what our friend Rusty heard, apparently from Martin himself.
Having just moved home (it has taken 18 months to finish the "refurbishment") I now have a studio to work in. Next year, time permitting, I will start work on another album, possibly including live tracks from various Martin Barre bands, plus 20 with Willie Porter, some best-of tracks, some instrumental versions of lesser known Tull songs and, finally, new music from me! A double/triple album???
Something is most definitely afoot with Martin on track to do a solo album and/or live album as well as a tour!

Sorry bud...there will be no Martin tour either with Peggy, solo or otherwise. Let me phrase this delicatly so as not to incur the wrath of the board master. Martin cannot put assess in the seats. As much as we all love and respect him, that is the truth. He attempted a tour a few years ago and failed financially even on the smale scale it was. I saw more Tull fans at Fairport Convention and Dave Mattacks shows than at Martin's. Where was everyone? Martin has been trying to line up investors for the last 10 years to back a proper tour with no luck. Ian has done him a great diservice by treating him the way he has. Palmer, Barlow and Evan had quick deaths. Martin is getting a slow death and the end is now here.

Even if Martin doesn't have the draw that Fairport Convention would have in the U.K., he could easily pack places in the U.S. That would depend on the size of venue which normally would be 3 to 5,000 seat auditorium capacity. Ian does the same thing on his solo tours. With Willie Porter there is definitely another facet to his appeal that interests many here. Those two together would be great. Also you need advance publicity to give people at least 3 month notice for a gig. Hey Martin, we have plenty of fans in North Carolina waiting for some good news.

I would attend a Martin Barre concert without hesitation. He has been my "guitar hero" for 40 years.
That said, I have to admit that - in my opinion - Martin is at his best when playing songs written by Ian. Martin's skills are perfectly suited for Tull material, and his solo parts and instrumental pieces, especially back in the 70s concerts, were always superb. But I just don't see Martin as a songwriter. I love he guy, and own all of his solo recordings, but I don't listen to them. I wish he would record a CD that featured "Stand up" era instrumental blues rock and invite Ian to play flute. No accordians allowed. That's the Tull sound I love the most and that I felt brought out the best in Martin.
It won't happen but a guy's allowed to wish.

It turns out that I know sunnyjim, he's an old Tull friend of mine, a social worker from Boston, and a helluva nice guy. He just sent me a message saying that he liked my 9/11 story and that he used to have a friend in NYC named Jeff who was an attorney, and then when I noticed his name was Russell, I immediately knew who he was!
I saw quite a few shows with Russell in the Boston and New York area for six or seven years in the nineties, and I believe a convention or two as well. But then he seemingly dropped off the face of the earth, I didn't see him at any more shows and fell out of touch with him.
I tried contacting him and asking Ken Green if he had heard from him, but to no avail. I figured (correctly, as it turns out) that he had become disillusioned with Tull, but who can really blame him with the interminable oldies/greatest hits tours, the croaking vocals, the orchestral crap, the sudden and pointless firings of beloved band members, the lack of any new material, the milking of the prior catalogue and Ian's tendency on occasion to berate his fans. I think that he was beginning to feel this way toward the late nineties when I lost contact with him.
I think there's been a misunderstanding concerning his initial posts, which were harshly critical of Ian and Tull. As everyone knows, that sort of thing is perfectly acceptable here, freedom of speech reigns supreme, and there's not much that would be out of bounds in that regard.
However, I think Paul would like to view the board primarily as a place to meet other Tull fans and make new friends, a place where we emphasize humor and friendship, and once that friendship is established, then it's bombs away, say whatever the fuck you like, really.
The reason for that is because there have been times on other forums where trolls would appear out of nowhere and start to stir up trouble, not only attacking the band, but also attacking people who defended the band, and that led to arguments and nastiness. So I think Paul's ears are attuned to harsh invective when it comes from a newbie who we don't know yet, and I can understand where he is coming from.
Having said that, let me tell you, Paul, you've got nothing to worry about with Russell, he's a terrific guy who I am very glad to become reacquainted with!
Jeff
