I was thinking of buying this one, does anyone have any reviews of this or Martin's other solo albums? He is incredible live. Also I wanted to share a hilarious 1-star review of the album from Amazon.com. The comments afterward, in which the reviewer takes back his nasty words about the album, had me laughing out loud too! tiny.cc/6atbo

On one of them (forgot which) he plays flute as well. The album demonstrates that there really can be no Tull without Martin. His other solo albums each have a few good songs, but are not as consistenly good as Stage Left. Jeff

It should be interesting to hear what he does on his own. Chris

s1015.photobucket.com/albums/af278/tootull/?start=allI like Martin's solo albums - I find his music to be very cool/relaxing. "After 30 years of occasional holiday singles, The Jethro Tull Christmas Album was a collection waiting to happen. With flute in tow, Ian Anderson leads his merry men through traditional and Tullish holiday tunes both old and new - all freshly recorded in that relatively acoustic Songs from the Wood style - and the results are splendid. "A Christmas Song" seems a little less cynical than it did in 1972, and along with some other gently ironic new compositions, it manages to blend right in with the more pervasive good cheer and warm fuzziness of the rest of the package. For all of Anderson's tut-tutting, he's an old softie when it comes to season's greetings. Swinging jazz versions of staples like "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" are included for an hour that the whole family can enjoy. So put another Yule log on the fire! Offering some of the most appealing melodies he has ever written. Anderson's new solo album Rupi's Dance, could've been the best Tull album in years if Martin Barre's electric guitar were on hand. The more delicate approach notwithstanding, Anderson's flute still works overtime, and there's plenty of food for thought in the clever wordplay. Barre's solo album, Stage Left, is an acoustic/electric grab bag of folk to fusion, showing his often-underrated chops to be as nimble as ever. Nestled in a Tull tune, any of these short workouts might've been a brilliant yin to Anderson's lyrical yang. But isolated here, these undeniably impressive exercises sometimes seem vaguely clinical. I really like Martins acoustic work which Stage Left has a few tracks of. I don't really enjoy the rocking Guitar stuff. Its all a bit 80's.
When Martin mentioned he was going to record an album of Tull stuff I thought this could be the best thing since slice bread. Seems the project got shelved though.

There were some pretty rockin' guitarists in the 60s, 70s and 90s too!
This is the part of that amazon review I linked to above that is one of the funniest things I've read in a very long time, maybe one of the funniest I've ever read about Tull:
"I think if when he is touring with Jethro Tull next time, and Ian Anderson does his little trick where he comes up behind Martin while he is playing and thrusts his flute between Martin's legs and reaches around the front and strokes it, if Martin would simply and definitively one time smack Ian into unconsciousness with his smoking axe, that he would grow a set of balls and pull the individuality and style that has been repressed from deep inside of him for decades and become a major guitar contender."
Then he says this:
"Please consider what I suggest about Ian, he really is a dick when he does that to you onstage, and deserves a good smack on the head, plus there are children in the audience that do not need to see such things."
There are so many ridiculous and hysterical things in this barely understandable screed it's hard to fathom. What's funniest is the fact that the guy who wrote it seems to think Martin has no individuality or style, and that he is actually reading an amazon review of his album!
Anyway, thought others might appreciate it.
Cheers, Chris

I have heard a few of the songs from the CD uploaded to youtube, and from what I can tell they are exceptionally good. An overload of awesome Barre guitar. That review was quite funny, though I don't agree with the rating.

yea he made about 200 copies I was lwas one of the lucky ones I got one too. That was a nice surprise. Actually Martin sings on quite a few tracks on Trick of Memory. Let me test the memory without looking: Trick of Memory Before Your Time Suspicion Cold Heart I told Martin I that I enjoyed his vocals over the other singers he's used simply because it's "all him", and he doesn't have a bad voice. He looked at me and said something like "why are you being so kind to me"?

I remember around that time he was playing some of the tracks in concert and played some flute too, he sounded good.
