A flute supplied by Ian Anderson will be leaving earth at 14.09 EST (2:09 PM) today with NASA Col. Catherine G. "Cady" Coleman. We're told to look for a duet on NASA television this April. www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html?param=publicStation Crew Hard at Work; New Trio Prepares for Launch - Expedition 26
"While three Expedition 26 crew members are already hard at work in space, another trio is preparing for a 2:09 p.m. EST (1:09 a.m. Thursday, Baikonur time) launch today from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan.Flight Engineers Oleg Skripochka and Alexander Kaleri are conducting a Russian experiment designed to detect depressurization. The experiment’s purpose is to increase spaceflight safety by detecting pressure leaks inside a spacecraft and understanding how they occur.
The two cosmonauts also are participating in an experiment that observes how crew members adapt to the long term effects of microgravity. Dubbed Typology, the Russian experiment measures how the physical effects of long duration stays in space affect a crew member’s work abilities and psychological state.
Commander Scott Kelly monitored bowling ball-sized robotic satellites inside the Japanese Kibo laboratory. Wednesday’s activity was a dry run of the satellites to prepare for Thursday when student teams on Earth will program and guide the miniature satellites to dock to a virtual solar panel.
The autonomous satellite experiment known as SPHERES (Synchronized Position Hold Engage Reorient Experimental Satellites) has been ongoing since Expedition 13. A way for students to participate was incorporated during Expedition 21. Thursday’s experiment run will be part of a national competition among high school students, for which 24 teams competed and 10 finalists were selected.
A new trio of Expedition 26 flight engineers are making their final preparations today before blasting off at 2:09 p.m. (1:09 a.m. Thursday, Baikonur time) to the International Space Station. Dmitry Kondratyev, Catherine Coleman and Paolo Nespoli will launch aboard the Soyuz TMA-20 spacecraft for a five-month stay in space.
During his stay aboard the station, Kelly will post some of his photographs of Earth on Twitter for an online geography trivia game."

www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/02/09/AR2011020903013.htmlSpace serenade: Astronaut has 4 flutes in orbit The Associated Press Wednesday, February 9, 2011; 11:36 AM CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Musical astronaut Catherine Coleman has plenty of flutes to pick from aboard the International Space Station. One is her own. Two belong to members of the Irish group, The Chieftains. And one belongs to the flutist with the Jethro Tull band. On Wednesday, she played a couple tunes for radio and TV interviewers. Coleman says she prefers creating music with other people. But she's the only flutist among the six-member space station crew. So she puts flute music on in the background, and plays along. She says she enjoys creating her "own little world" with music. She hopes to team up with the Chieftain and Tull flutists for a live space-to-ground concert before she returns to Earth in May.

The Chieftains are another one of my favorite bands. I had their best of back when I was in high school--listened to it a lot. A few months ago I bought The Chieftains 8--insanely good music. Don't think they live up to the passion of the Bothy Band though.
Would love to see Chieftains and Tull play a show together. Or even just the Chieftains and Ian. Hell, they should make an album together. The Chieftains have collaborated with so many people you'd think they'd give Ian a call.

For the latest episode of 'flutes in space' tune into www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/expeditions/expedition26/flute_on_iss.htmlFlight Engineer Catherine Coleman (right) demonstrated playing a flute in microgravity. Credit: NASA TVThe link above provides a link to her discussing the flute in space or you can link from here. www.nasa.gov/multimedia/videogallery/index.html?media_id=61427791Weightlessness provides her wit that wild hair look of ian from [more than] several years ago. She isn't the forst to take a flute into space though it seems: "Other astronauts have flown flutes in space aboard the space shuttle. Ellen Ochoa, who is a classical flutist, brought her flute on STS-56 in 1993 and took a moment to play it during an educational event. John Herrington, who was the first tribal registered Native American astronaut, brought a wooden flute with him on STS-113 in 2002. The flute was hand-carved by a member of the Kennedy Space Center Native American Intertribal Council."STS-56 Mission Specialist Ellen Ochoa plays the flute in space shuttle Discovery's aft flight deck in April 1993. WTF? Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson to Perform Out-of-This-World Space Duet with Astronautexclaim.ca/News/wtf_jethro_tulls_ian_anderson_to_perform_out-of-this-world_space_duet_with_astronautBy Gregory Adams For a certain generation, it used to be all you needed to take you to another plane was to crank a copy of Jethro Tull's 1971 landmark, Aqualung LP, full blast with a couple of illicit substances nearby. The group's singer, Ian Anderson, is still kickin' it live, and an upcoming performance is poised to take us higher than ever before: he will be duetting with an astronaut. A press release explains that Anderson's April 12 performance in Perm, Russia will find him playing a song with U.S. astronaut Colonel Catherine Coleman, though she will be performing from an orbiting space station. Her part of the literally out-of-this-world performance will be screened by video link as she floats about the galaxy. The show was put together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin's first manned space flight in 1961. So she could go toe-to-toe with the flute-playing rock legend, Coleman has been practising the singer's trademark one-legged stance, though the orbiting flautist has been floating for the better part of her trip. The pair will be performing an excerpt of "Bouree," from Jethro Tull's 1969 album, Stand Up. At apogee

Sorry Folks,
I was away for a few days over the week-end and received a message on Friday asking me to pass this onto you all for your viewing pleasure.
It couldn't upload it via phone as I was in the back end of beyond with no signal. So it may have already appeared, apologies once more for the delay in getting it to our board members screens.

I think it's been a very long time since I've said this in public but, Ian Anderson, I love you! That was so cool that normal, everyday cool looks dorky in comparison.
