Hi my fellow Tull friends!
Here I am in Castlebar writing in a lovely B&B on Saturday 19th March 2011 - after a very mind-numbingly tiring bus journey from Belfast yesterday. Left Belfast Europa bus-station at 10:10am, changed at Enniskillen and finally arrived at Castlebar at around 5:30pm. Never been here before.
I traveled yesterday because I am going to see the Christy Moore show tonight - there is no way I could enjoy a concert the same day as doing all that travelling! Checked the venue out last night - lovely. Inside there is a Tull poster - with the standard promo pic but also with the iconic silhouette image of IA on one leg playing the flute - although he looks much thinner - think James Taylor or a Mark Knopfler circa '79 standing on leg playing the flute with very frizzy hair. I'll take a picture and put it up when I get back home.
I'm damn pissed with myself I didn't get to finish reading Christy Moore's autobiography before the show tonight. What a rich life the man has led. Really looking forward to this concert tonight.
Anyway, just checking in with my fellow Tull friends - I'll be sure to give a full write-up of the Jethro Tull concert tomorrow night. Yay! I'm on my holidays and enjoying myself! Why not! Eh?
Oh, just a random shout-out - if there are any other Tull fans who have travelled to Castlebar and play guitar or flute and want to do a bit of busking before the show and make a little bread/money then send me a PM. I've got a flute with me. Can also accompany on guitar if you have one. Or if you just want to meet up, grab a pint and talk tull - drop me a pm!
Brian.
p.s: I would like to know who the head-honcho is here! I have a formal complaint to make. Of course I was delighted to win the lyric quiz - the rare radio promo of 'A Gift of Roses' - many many thanks. However, I understood that I was also to receive a pair of Pantians. I am deeply distraught, inconsolable as a matter of fact that I did not receive these Pantians. I was secretly hoping to wear these Pantians to the concert tomorrow night. What is the correct process and procedure for me to lodge my complaint. I'd appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction. Many thanks.

Brian, enjoy the show tomorrow night, have a great time! I will anxiously await your review. You should see if you can find Mix there. Are you seeing Horslips too? I think they are playing there just a few days after Tull, if I recall. LOL, about the Pantians, Paul can we get a shipment of them out to Bri as soon as possible? There are no head honchos, or honchos of any kind here, though. The Jethro Tull Board was founded because some Humorless Honchos at another site had a vastly inflated sense of their own self-importance, never hesitating to throw their weight around by practicing blatant censorship and brow-beating anyone who dared to either disagree with them, or challenge their heavy-handed policies and myriad, idiotic "rules." So we are decidedly anti-honcho! This is a free and egalitarian Tull community, which is already starting to "run itself," and that is exactly what was envisioned from the start. Thanks Jeff - I fully intend to enjoy every second of it. Day off to a good start for me - a professional nights sleeping, good solid breakfast and if anything just a couple of pints of guinness a few hours before the show so I am in prime listening conditioning to enjoy Jethro Tull.
Hey, Jeff and Paul! Just forget about the Pantians. I've dried my eyes and got over it! OK? LOL.
I'll post my thoughts after the show or Monday.
Brian.

That's a bummer, Caroline, I wish you could have gone, but I am sure that either Tull or "The Ian Band" will tour Ireland again in the next year or so. The real energy these days is in the solo shows. The shows that are billed as Tull are still very good, the band still sounds great, but the solo tours have been more interesting in terms of song selection, with a lot more new material, etc. Jeff

Best. Tull. Concert. Ever. Maybe it's just me growing up and appreciating things in life more as I get older - but that wasn't a show last night - boy and girls, it was a drug. Lovely and long bus trip home to lovely Belfast for me now - got my Pynchon, a few inspirational books, fully charged Ipod and a notepad to write down my thoughts (a review of sorts) about the concert last night. I'll post my thoughts up in the next few days.

Ok, first off I just want to say sorry for hi-jacking stormmonkey's thread. I'm very much looking forward to his review but I didn't see much point in starting another thread for my review so here goes. Ten years! Ten years!!! That was my last Tull gig. With the exception of an Ian Anderson rubbing elbows in 2003 my only view of the band has been via the you tube videos. Tull, to my knowledge have never played the West of Ireland. Castlebar is in Mayo. In fact Ireland's newly recently elected PM Enda Kenny comes from Castlebar. Mayo is a very rural place with sparse population so having Tull play here is quite a privilege. I've been very critical of Ian these last few years and if I'm honest I was partly dreading this gig because the last two shows had been disappointing. Ian was even older now and from the youtube clips the voice was all but gone. The theatre has a capacity of 1500. Its actually a really nice theatre and was recently refurbished. You can see from the pic the front seats and the rising seats to the rear. These seats were pretty much occupied but none of the balcony seats were taken. I'd say audience numbers were around 500. That's not bad, I was thinking there might be hardly anyone but those 500 were enthusiastic all be it much older than me. I sneaked in some nice malt whiskey to get me in the mood and to hold off a bug I'd developed. Show time was just after 8. I'm not too great at remembering set lists so I hope someone else has that. Kick off was living in the past followed by nothing is easy. So from the moment they started I smiled. An old friend was in front of me. The band were tight!!! The sound was excellent. Not too loud but plenty of punch. First time I've seen David & John. I was a bit sceptical about these guys having seen them in the rubbing elbows band which I didn't think much of but they are fantastic. I love David's playing. He's a superb bassist and he really brings something to the table. John is quieter, unlike Andrew Giddings who was quite a character. But I liked John and couldn't fault his playing although I'd question some of the cheesy string sounds but that might be Ian's choice. Best of all they felt like a band and there was a really nice vibe coming from them all. They seemed to be really enjoying playing together. Doane was not there. I'd heard a rumour he might not be and was disappointed thinking a stand in drummer would be a weak point in the band. How wrong was I! I didn't catch the guys name but I couldn't fault his playing, he played like he had been in the band for years. Really good drummer. So on to Ian. He was in a good mood but most of all he was cool. I'd felt Ian had lost his coolness in recent years but he's lost none of it and I was quite taken aback at the amount of energy he still has. Running up and down the stage, doing his little dances. He was awesome and at 63 has more energy than I do and I'm nearly 30 years younger! Flute playing was superb as always as was his Guitar work. He played Harmonica on 'AND' but sadly that was it for his instruments. Was hoping he'd have the Mandolin for a track or two. The voice wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Its not great and there were some songs he clearly struggled with, tuning and phrasing but overall it didn't tarnish the show. I'm coming to accept that the voice of the past is gone and he can only do what he can with what he has today but he more than made up for it with his energy. I'm pleased to say there is plenty of life in the old dog and long may he continue. I was really looking forward to seeing Martin and he didn't disappoint. That man is a legend on Guitar. Its an honour to see him play. He looked like he was having a lot of fun, smiling at the others and what not. His solos were superb and a real highlight. Set list was ok. Up to me was played, seemed a bit new for the band? Maybe they are bringing stuff in for the up and coming Aqualung tour. While I love Brick, its not one Ian should sing any more so I wouldn't care if it was dropped. Aqualung which I wasn't really looking forward to hearing AGAIN was actually really good, Ian sang it ok. The only new song they played was a change of horses. Having now experienced it live I agree with others, its a goodie. Looking forward to the studio recording They did one encore which was Loco. Was hoping they would do another but sadly not. As stormmonkey said, this wasn't a gig it was a drug! I'm still buzzing about the gig and can't get Tull out my head. Want more more more!!! So I'm pleased to report I'm now fully back on board the Tull ship and happy to follow the captain in whatever direction he sees fit. I'd love to make it across to England for this solo tour. Will see. So to sum up, it was a wonderful gig, magical as only Tull can do and I was really pleased to see Ian still with so much energy and able to be such a great entertainer as he's always been. Long live Tull!

I felt the same way about the solo shows in the US ... Ian used the same drummer, Scott Hammond, so he had played a number of the same songs. As for John being quiet; if you are lucky enough to be right up front, you realize that in fact, he loves the music and is incredibly focused each night. Like he is on the same drug as the audience .... I am embarrassed to say, I have been collecting seats here and there for the US summer tour. Ah, and a few seats for the England solo tour .... selling my car should cover that one. Now aren't you glad at least someone stayed positive all these years? Well, about Tull anyway ....

In any case I'm glad you got them on one of those special nights. Actually the last few times I've seen Ian/Tull they were great. I think Ian deals with his vocal limitations much better then he had in the past. You and I have been on the same page about Ian for a long time. But how lucky are we to still be able to appreciate his live show after all these years? May we be so lucky for many more!

Hey TM,
I saw a few posters and I think there was a piece in the local paper. The Dublin show got a plug on Radio 1 at lunch time and they played Life's a long song which was nice.
The thing is Ireland only has 4 million people and 3/4 of those live in and around Dublin on the east coast. Mayo and the west is very rural with farming being the main industry. This is why I was surprised Tull came to Castlebar and probably why they have not played the west before. I really didn't know what to expect, part of me was thinking there might even be less than a 100 turn up!!!
I've never seen so many biker types in one room in Ireland. Tull fans tend to be alternative types but your rarely see them here. Being English, I also noticed a lot of other English at the gig which didn't surprise me.
I wonder if 500 was enough to make it financially acceptable to Ian? Hope so, he seemed to enjoy the gig and I hope he comes back. Maybe others can tell me if he returns to venues where turn out is in lower numbers?
I think my problem is I stopped seeing Tull as a band. The rubbing elbows show I saw really put a downer on me. But seeing them on Sunday as a band really got me excited.
I can't say enough how surprised I was by his energy. I'd really resigned myself to thinking he was just milking it the last ten years but what I saw was an artist doing what an artist does. Ian really impressed, just like he did the first time in 92 when I was 15/16.

An Irish Tull review, this looks like a good thread for that. www.hotpress.com/music/reviews/live/7605017.htmlJethro Tull 24 Mar 2011 40 years since the release of their classic Aqualung album, Jethro Tull are still capable of “eyeing little girls with bad intent.” Bounding on to the strains of 'Living in the Past' Ian Anderson and co deliver a truly wondrous musical journey that is at turns other-worldly, impish, and mired in a uniquely English brand of eccentricity and pastoral cleaves. Oh, but prog is such a dirty word. Wasn't punk supposed to kill off this sort of music? Yeah right. Never send a pocket-knife to a firefight. Derogatory as the 'p' word has become, Jethro Tull were always more than that and exhibited a self awareness, sense of humour and genre jumping mastery that vaulted the parapets of prog and ran mooning into the glades. At its centre is the one-legged satyr, the flauting dervish, the lascivious smirker, Ian Anderson. Still possessed of his box of tics, foot flicks, beard strokes, bug eyed gurning and body jerks, tonight he looks like a pirate gypsy of mischievous intent. And this intent is manifested in a performance replete with bewitching shafts of musical light spun from the magic lantern. From the lilting, contemplative, happy-wistful ‘Life is a Long Song' to the surrealist (mis)adventures of 'Up to Me', sparks shoot in all directions, fires start and wood sprites dance to the hallucinatory refrains of the flute. The 12-bar blues of ‘Beggar’s Farm’, offers a hypnotic guitar riff as a perfect foil to the clock tick drum beat before Martin Barre lets rip on a muscular solo that leads straight to the jukebox at David Lynch's Black Lodge. The slow grind of 'A New Day Yesterday' further highlights Tull's blues roots as well as the essence of tonight's performance as sounds from the stage go forth, entwine, float and disperse before being drawn back in by the band and refashioned anew on the potter's wheel. Crowd favourite 'Thick as a Brick' pokes fun at that bedrock of prog pomposity, the concept album, 'Bourée' is their cruise ship cocktail lounge jazz take on Bach, and 'Mother Goose' imparts visions of the oddities on display in public parks before, as Anderson informs the audience, “dog shit and paedophiles took over.” The haunting discordance and ominous undertones of 'A Change of Horses' sees it shift from Old Testament intoning to the realm of space odyssey and rock opera, ‘Budapest’ gives Barrie a chance to dance around the fret board before ‘Aqualung’ is hauled out and Anderson lets loose his inner Kenny Everett. The shuffling madness of a curfew-breaking encore of 'Locomotive Breath' caps a perfect night. This is a band comfortable in their skin, appreciative and proud of their back catalogue and after six decades in the music business still capable of taking the listener onto musical planes less travelled. Makes you glad to be thick as a brick. Sublime. ShareThis Eric Egan

I got these from 2 different concert goers. Cheers, Caroline, and thanks for finding and posting these videos from the Castlebar show, which received rave reviews here from Mix and Stormmonkey! I thought you wouldn't mind if I went into your post to include the videos themselves, rather than just the links. It's the only time I ever do that. To get the videos to appear in your post, all you need to do is highlight the youtube links and then click on the youtube button above the message box. Jeff

Hello all fellow Tull fans on this wonderful board, This is my 1st time posting on it. I tracked down my 2 youtube videos to here (Life is a & Bouree), Thanks Caroline (& Jeff). Taken frorm the 1st row @ Sun nites brilliant gig in Castlebar. I booked the hotel ages ago when the tickets were announced to arrive fri relax with my wife , Pick up Christy Moore on Sat & Headline the weekend with Jethro Tull Sun. Couldnt believe my bad luck when they later announced they were playing in Dublin on the Fri night. The Wife would have strung me up had I tried to shorten the Castlebar weekend as the Christy gig was really for her. Ive been a massive Tull fan since I was 12 yrs old (currently 43) & this was my 7th time to be lucky enough to see them. Wont be my last I hope. There was so much I liked about the Castlebar show but my Highlight I think was the superb rendition of Budapest. Think I'll stop rambling on for now in case Im not doing this properly. Gonna be keeping a close eye here from now on. Only found the site on Mon night. Am Loving it. Cheers I got these from 2 different concert goers.

You needn't have stopped, as I was enjoying reading about your Castlebar weekend. I would love to hear more of your thoughts about the show, about Tull, or about anything else you'd like to discuss. Many of us here are long-time fans like yourself, who discovered the band as teenagers and have been totally hooked ever since. Please feel free to express yourself freely here, as there are no limits or rules here as to how to "properly" post. You may find that on other forums, but never here. I'm happy you found this site and even happier to hear that you plan to be an active participant here. I look forward to it! P.S. I know what you mean about missing a show. When I got married, it so happened that our Italian honeymoon which was booked in advance conflicted with a Tull show at The Beacon Theater, which was two blocks from my apartment at the time. I had to miss the show, so when we returned from Italy we took a second honeymoon three weeks later. To Buffalo, where in addition to the honeymoon attraction of Niagara Falls, we also saw Jethro Tull at the Erie County Fair! Jeff
