The lyrics were credited at the time to the fictitious child character, Gerald Bostock, whose parents supposedly lied about his age. The record instantly became a number one Billboard Chart album and enjoyed considerable success in many countries of the world. So, forty years on, what would Gerald Bostock aged fifty in 2012 be doing today? What might have befallen him? The anniversary part two album will examine the possible different paths that the precocious young schoolboy, Gerald Bostock, might have taken later in life through alter-ego characters with song-section identities illustrating the hugely varied potential twists and turns of fate and opportunity. Not just for Gerald but to echo how our own lives develop, change direction and ultimately conclude through chance encounters and interventions, however tiny and insignificant they might seem at the time. So! Come on ye childhood heroes! Won't you rise up from the pages of your comic-books your super crooks and show us all the way. Well! Make your will and testament. Won't you? Join your local government. We'll have Superman for president let Robin save the day. There are at least two alter-ego characters who appear in the new St. Cleve Chronicle. Jerry Baskitt (50) is one, and Garry Bartok (50) is another. We're hoping there will be a Gerard Boardstick (50), as well. Jeff

Despite what little Anderson the Drummer Boy says, I feel for Martin Barre. This is eerily reminiscent of the way that Anderson dumped Evan et al. at the time of the "A" album. It was all... an accident.

Interesting album cover. Good to see them doing something out of the norm again.
I wonder what the kid (well he's not a kid anymore) who posed as Gerald for the cover of TAAB thinks about seeing his face all over the place again. Does he get royalty? ;D
Don't have the money to pre-order yet. But I will though.

Remember This Derek Shulman, the former front man and singer from one of Anderson's own favorite progressive rock groups, Gentle Giant, pushed the musician in the direction of a sequel. Shulman went on to a very successful career as a record company executive, and in 2011 he challenged Anderson to write the new material, which follows Gerald Bostock to the age of 50 in 2012.
Track listing for Thick as a Brick2: Whatever Happened To Gerald Bostock?

I knew Derek was an executive, but not where. So that's how this all came about. I preordered the collector's edition. Can't wait! The song line-up looks good. I'll judge you all, and make dam sure, no one judges me.

It was all... an accident. I guess you have to make it look good, like the Sopranos. Ian should mention Martin's tour though. Jumpstart or tow me away.

Interesting wording here. ultimateclassicrock.com/ian-anderson-thick-as-a-brick-two/Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson Announces Sequel to Classic ‘Thick As a Brick’ Album - Meanwhile, Anderson — who has been working more and more on solo projects under his own name in recent years — has more solo material expected to drop this year. ”New [solo] recordings are scheduled for release in 2012,” reads a post on his website.

Some people are already "gearing up" to compare TAAB2 against TAAB1. That's ridiculous. TAAB2 is new material, and despite the name, has almost a completely different theme (a reflection on life) from TAAB1's satirical and skeptical view of class differences. It is written by a man looking back on his life from the age of late 50's. Give it a chance to stand on its own merit!
By the way, any recommendations where one can order it? I know it isn't released until April 2, but should we place an order on Amazon, I-tunes, or what? Are they going to be replaying any of the previews, excerpts, etc.?

Just like Aqualung 40. Actually the price for Aqualung dropped 4 dollars before the release date. So you may be able to save a dollar or two before the April release date. To be Thick as a Brick.

Rock Edition was fortunate enough to get to speak with Ian Anderson about the new album and accompanying tour. Read on to find out more. www.rockedition.com/interviews/artist-interviews/interview-with-ian-anderson-of-jethro-tull/When will the tours be? We start in the middle of April in the UK; there are a whole bunch of tour dates that are currently up on JethroTull.com. As for the US tour dates, I know what they are! [laughs] I know where I'm going to be. It's been pretty much set in stone for a while, but there's been a few little tweaks and turns, and we're just getting close to that point where we will be putting the tickets on sale for two American tours that take place between mid-September and mid-November.

Thanks TT.
I think this part says it all on the Martin front.
With Martin Barre, for example, he has a certain kind of music that he loves to play, and a bunch of the stuff that we have recorded together over the years, he doesn't really feel a musical affiliation for, because he knows what he likes. It's different if you're writing a piece of music because the music has to be right, as opposed to writing music to impress or utilize your band-mates. There can be two different things. On this occasion, the music and the concept were the absolute driving forces, and I had to pick the musicians I felt would really be the right people to play it.
What we've read from Martin corroborates Ian's view. Of course no mention of Doane, but Doane has a heavier feel then Scott IMO. I'm expenses had something to do with it as well.

With all the excitement about TAAB 2, I just wondered if Ian would be rehearsing his new material. This is also on the agenda this month: Ian Anderson plays orchestral Jethro Tull - 2012 FEB 24 Potsdam/Berlin Nikolaisaal
