I just had to tell somebody. I'm currently having my first ever listen to Aqualung (I know, I know, how did I avoid it for so many years!).
Anyway. I'm on track 2 and the flute is giving me shivers.
Awesome.

Well, I don't know. TAAB2 is ordered and (hopefully) arriving tomorrow.
So far I only have Aqualung, A Passion Play, TAAB and Songs From The Wood. Haven't had a duff one yet!

Congratulations, rredmond. I remember mine back in 1971. Fantastic experience. I thought it was the best thing I had ever heard. Still think that way, never wavered. Well, that's one Up to Me.

I think Aqualung has, for the moment, jumped into top spot. Absolutely cracking stuff.
No real excuses for leaving it so long to listen to Tull. I'm already into Genesis, Yes, Crimson, VDGG, Gentle Giant. I think, somewhere in the back of my mind I just thought they would be too folky for me.
Or maybe I was leaving the best til last?

Welcome to the joyous music of Jethro Tull. What albums are you thinking of getting next? I'd recommend Stand up next maybe heavy horses. Anything from the Seventies really. It kinda not quite the same after 1979. Enjoy.

The first time I heard the song was down on the boardwalk at the Jersey shore. One of the shops was blasting it.

And Stand Up is a great mix of acoustic and electric.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions, everybody! Bowing to popular demand, I'll be getting Heavy Horses soon but will probably go for Stand Up before that to check out how it all started.
I've only have the 'old' version of Aqualung (25th anniversary version) which sounds pretty good to me. Is the new version a big improvement? I see Steve Wilson has been involved so it probably is!
I also have a desire to check out a later album. Well, it will have to be done sooner or later! Cheers, Adrian

Finding Tull was the best for me, so exciting every time I picked up an album. My suggestion would be to go back and get the beginnings. Stand-Up is a must have for me. Seeing the progession of Ian and the shifting band would be (and was for me anyway) an interesting way of understanding how they got to Aqualung and TAAB, let alone gems like Heavy Horses or Songs From the Wood. Stand-Up and Benefit were great albums in and of themsevles but in retrospect, show how much they pushed forward to making some of the most diverse music in rock history. Just my 2 cents Enjoy Darin

After you have a listen to Stand Up, you might want to check out Benefit (I don't think I saw anyone mention that yet, sorry someone did) from 1970, released before Aqualung and after Stand Up. It's a bit experimental and different from those other two albums, yet of course the same in many respects--you're sure to find stuff you like on it Oh and welcome to the board!

The 2 cd version is awesome. You're missing half a dozen great bonus tracks on yours and the new remixes are great too

I may have done too much!
I've had the opening riff of Aqualung going around in my head all day.

That's a good thing.
I heard it in 1971 and it's been there ever since.

I may have done too much! I've had the opening riff of Aqualung going around in my head all day. I have experienced that conditon myself. The best cure is to go LIVE with a longer version.

If you can find a copy of 20 Years of Jethro Tull... the box set... whether it be second hand, or through one of those 'online' locations... or anywhere else... do it.
That thing hooked me for good and I still think its the best 'collection' put together by any band period. It is absolutely essential in my books.

I may have done too much! I've had the opening riff of Aqualung going around in my head all day. So when did you pick up Aqualung? Wish you got the 2cd version. Some of tulls best songs are on Disc 2 eg. Life is a long song, Wondring again, Up the pool. Other great little tracks too such as For later, Dr Bogenbroom, Just trying to be. Anyway, here's my 4.5 star tull cd's ;D stand up- 3cd deluxe remasterbenefit- remasteraqualung- 2 cd 40 year remasterthick as a brick a passion play warchild- remastersongs from the wood- remasterheavy horses- remasterbursting out stormwatch- remastera- remasterbroadsword and the beast- remasterroots to branches dotcom thick as a brick 2 I've highlighted remasters due to the great bonus tracks. They tend to be the best or among the best songs on the whole cd. Lots of awesome singles. Warchild and Aqualung(40 year) are the very best with almost an album worth of extra tracks which probably make a better album than the actual album. Benefit, Stand up and Stormwatch also have an EP worth of great bonus tracks up there with the best songs

I may have done too much! I've had the opening riff of Aqualung going around in my head all day. Yes, take it easy! Don't try to absorb 40+ years of JT too fast. I also recommend the 2CD Aqualung as a must. Then Stand Up, maybe Benefit, before moving on to the newer albums. Take your time and have fun! "Cecil"'s suggestions are very good.

Thanks for all the wonderful replies and suggestions everyone!
Geoff, I did try to slow down last night. I thought about listening to something else but then ended up with TAAB instead (already using the acronyms!). Also, still hoping for TAAB2 to arrive soon.
Cecil, I didn't know there was a 3-disc version of Stand Up. Wow.
The great thing about coming so late to this party is that I've cut out all that 'buying everything twice' and can jump straight to the remasters with bonus tracks. Well, looks like I'm already buying another copy of Aqualung and then hopefully there'll be a 40th anniversary TAAB... help!
