My answer would probably change from time to time, but I think it would be a tossup between The Moody Blues and The Beatles.

Mine would probably be Marillion (Steve Hogarth era).

I would have to go with Ian Anderson's solo band.

This is a hard question to answer, especially because I don't think I even have a favorite band. I'll name a few... The Incredible String Band Pentangle, and all the musicians therein. ELECTRIC WIZARD I know it's just supposed to be one but I th--ALL HAIL THE WIZARD!!!

Floyd and Genesis definitely have a place in my collection, too, though by quirk of fate or whatever, I only have Peter Gabriel solo albums and all of my Genesis is from the Phil Collins era. I haven't really crossed over into downloading yet. I just have the files I saved from my once-massive CD collection, though the CDs themselves fell by the wayside some time ago.
Other honorable mentions for me would be Cat Stevens, Yes, The Fixx (I came of age in the 80s), Big Country, the Alan Parsons Project, and Sting. And many, many, more.
I'm also an avid listener of Classical music (ever more as I get older), and J.S. Bach is hands-down my favorite composer. I love the Baroque era.
Recently I've been belatedly "discovering" stuff I should have been listening to in high school- stuff my friends liked, but I wasn't into at the time- like Van Halen and Rush.

The Beatles and Floyd. And then maybe Zeppelin and King Crimson. Then Genesis (prior to "And Then there Were Three") and Yes (prior to "Tormato").
By the way, my answers will always be multi-parters. ;D

Mine have not changed in decades, probably the same situation with most others here. I have even referred to it as my holy sextet and it is Tull, Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Grateful Dead, Miles Davis, John Coltrane.

Looks like Tull fans have some consensus on our favorite bands.

Well I said Genesis but really there are several groups that are fighting the second place... Led Zeppelin, Yes (prior to "Tormato"), King Crimson, Zappa, Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, ELP and generally progressive rock

I like classical or electric violin only Most proggers have Genesis, Crimson and Floyd in their top 5. They miss my top 10. Crimson were best around 1970 and 71 for me when they were more melodic and used more jazz and classical influences. I don't mind the Wetton era though.

Seems like we have a lot of prog fans on here. Only natural I guess. I enjoy bands in the genre but never really got into most of the genre itself.
One of my favorites is the EARLY Charlie Daniels Band--before he became a bornagain christian--back when he smoked weed, drank, and helped bridge the gap between Hippies and Hillbillies.
You can't beat his early albums like Honey in the Rock, Fire on the Mountain, Nightrider. Genuinely good quality rock music. He really alienated a lot of his fans when he became so dammed political.

Ha pretty cool, I was just looking at the nearest cd rack next to my table....I totally left off Jeff Beck! Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn many others. Totally different mindset I think, I also have a sizable jazz (straight ahead and fusion) collection, but again a totally different mood. Hillbilly violin!? Aside from the occasional "token" bluegrass tune the Dregs hadnt tended that way on most of there later albums, Jerry Goodman is hardly hillbilly. I was an early fan of Ponty but he became tedious in the 80s. I went to see Him in 84 and I felll aasleeep! I'm liking the most recent Steve Morse involvement with the band "Flying Colors" and been slowly collecting Porcupine Tree and a couple other newer bands..... Darin Red and Starless are essential Crimson. Again the ever changing nature of Fripps projects are up and down but mostly up for me.

Dude, hillbilly violin is the best violin. And it's called Fiddle. And Darin is right, Dregs does not have much hillbilly fiddle. But they do rock. Night of the living Dregs for the win.
In terms of Fripp, I really like Larks Tongues in Aspic and Starlets but the dude himself is too intellectual. There are people who don't take nearly as much of an intellectual air than he does and their music stimulates the brain more.

Night of the Living Dregs pulled me in but check out Full Circle, Bring em back Alive (live) burns! (mid 90s), Unsung Heroes, Industry Standard in the 80s. Some of the best instrumental rock there is. and most all very "Un hillbilly" Very well written stuff. Instrumental music has to work harder (be well constructed) because they don't have the luxury of the "attraction", the frontman singer or lyrics. I love it tho. Darin

Jobson had cool violin in A. It wasn't rock style violin. I think it's American violinists which I don't like. English, French and Italian do it right ;D

I have Larks and Red. They are pretty solid. But without Sinfield, Mcdonald and Giles Crimson lost all their jazzy and classical compositional ideas. I tend to only really like the slow tracks from Red, Larks and Starless. Without Nightwatchman, Book of Saturday, Exiles, Starless etc I find the rest to be very much filler with the occasional cool riff. Red is a cool song and also bits from Larks, but there are lots of nothing parts for me. Just experimental sounds with no melody and repetition. I have Posiedon and Lizard also and they are my faves. I also like their early 80s. But I really find the Wetton era overrated alot. I don't see much composition genius from this era apart from some nice slow tracks. They seem to be at the top of the prog tree but i don't see why they should be in the top dozen prog bands of the 70s. They didn't even exist from 1975-1979. That's half the decade lol

There are lots of bands that need to heard from the past. I reckon there's more interesting bands than Floyd and Crimson from England, France, Italy and Germany. Really melodic and colourful composers and great musicians. Try these guys out:
