We all know that Tull have had their share of bad reviews but MAN, even when they were making classic albums they were getting no respect. Iv'e been scanning through boxes of Tull recently and came across this wonderful review of Minstrel from Good Times Magazine 1975.

Good Times Magazine is complimentary, as in free, which pretty much tells you how successful the rag has become, and from what I could surmise, is only available in the Long Island, NY area. As everyone knows, New York critics are a bunch of pretentious wankers who are only vaguely aware of music outside of the New York area. For instance, a twatish New Yorker like John Christgau regularly gave the insipid novelty act The New York Dolls 5 star ratings on their albums, while bashing King Crimson, Yes and Tull on their classic releases. And of course, Rolling Stone Magazine is headquartered in NY as well.
Twats, the lot of 'em.

Hey, I remember this one time in Jethro Tull, when every song and album sounded like A Passion Play. That was awesome.

The Rolling Stone wouldn't know good music even if Jesus Christ came down from heaven on the day of Rapture with a guitar, harmonica and a choir of angels. I can see the review now: "This Jesus fellow is just a talky Jew with a twisted beard and a Bob Dylan fetish, spouting banalities of peace and love. And the choir? Simply pretentious."*cue lightning bolt*

I find the first one a bit humorous: "It really sounds like outtakes from War Child, which sounds like outtakes from Passion Play, which sounds like crap." Sort of true in a very pessimistic way Of course all three albums are classics in my mind.

I guess it is pretty funny if you consider that this persons only (supposed) actual job is to listen carefully to a collection of songs and write about them then tell us what they honestly think. Which apparently they didn't want to do. 2 albums later Their still taking Tull on for A Passion Play. No matter how you feel about APP does anybody thats listened to Minstrel think it has some relation to Warchild or APP? I think its pretty remarkable how different they (The songs and the band) are 2 years later (as opposed to a Bruce Springsteen……) I wonder what would've happened had they said "All of Springsteen's songs sound like watered down versions of his first 2 albums" Doesn't sound like the reviewer drilled down too deep….or wanted to. Tull probably didn't host the proper amount of press party's with the obligatory coke tray and groupies to give the reviewer the proper feeling of importance that they felt they deserved. Hilarious, if it wasn't going to affect sales or public opinion….LOL Darin

I have a lot of stuff to scan and upload, still a huge number of items from Mac, and also from Max [David], certainly more than several items I have never seen before

Totally agree, I remember reading one review which labelled it a rag-tag collection of out-takes and abandoned songs, best collection of rag-tag out-takes and abandoned songs I've heard [well up to Nightcap anyway]

Those critics are absurd. Simply ridiculous. APP being, in is head, an out take of TAAB shows that he only considered the length of the albums, not their content. APP is a controverse album, but one that I love. Warchild is incredibly powerful and funny. Back-Door Angels is superb. Minstrel is algo awesome in a different sort of way. All amazing records.

They did the same sort of thing with so many popular bands of the time. It would have been preferable not to have those types of critics published in major magazines. Oh well, I suppose it's all water under the bridge now. Still pretty entertaining though
