This track is unlike the majority of Black Bonzo music. They normally sound somewhat like Uriah Heep. To my knowledge they only use flute on a couple of tracks. Here is a live version of revelation song one of their flute tracks. Somehow It makes me think of some tracks from Led Zeppelin 3 with Ian added on flute . Anyway they are a cracking band live saw them last week in the UK on their tour away from Sweden .
Enjoy
ps what has happened to my Avatar ? it no longer shows up on my PC

Definitely resembles some of Ian's work with the breathy flute style and the kind of aggressive acoustic attack that Ian likes. I have noticed that certain things here tend to come and go, including some of the avatars, certain photos and images and occasionally the Home, Search, Login, etc. buttons with the Under Wraps logo that Paul designed. But they eventually do come back. Your avatar does seem to be one that occasionally comes and goes (I can't see it right now either), but I am sure it will re-appear at some point. If not, I am sure Paul will do what he can to restore it, or get you another avatar if need be. Jeff

Many ongoing thanks, Preston, for continuing to develop this outstanding thread, and thanks too for Rob's videos, which I have been listening to when I can, and looking at his lyrics, and am planning to comment on soon. But since I'm here, I might as well comment now on something that I've been meaning to mention. One of the things I really like very much about Rob's own material is the quality of the lyrics. He is a perceptive and sensitive songwriter. I have also noticed that he only very occasionally falls into the trap of rhyming multi-syllabic words. He seems to instinctively stick to simple rhymes, which work best. Ian is a master of employing simple and apt rhymes. He rarely uses multi-syllabic rhymes and the few times he does do that, he usually gets away with it because the rhymes are not exact, because they don't really have to be. (Of course there are some downright bad lyrics that Ian has written, but they are very, very few considering he has penned about 400 songs, I believe.) I'm not sure how familiar Rob is with Ian's entire body of work, but I think he could learn a lot about lyrics and songwriting from listening to a lot of Tull songs and really paying attention to the lyrics. I guess it's not a great surprise that I would say that though! Jeff

I guess that many here will be familiar with Donovan and also John Martyns work that featured the magical flute of Harold Mcnair.
Here are two examples of Mcnairs work with Donovan from Donovans 'A gift from a flower garden' release
The Enchanted Gypsy
The tinker and the crab

There was an example of Italian band Delirium earlier in this thread from their Dolce Aqua release. I thought it was time to bring further examples of this band to your attention
Here is some great flute prog rock from their 3rd release. I love the flute at 3.38 and at 5.50 which for some reason reminds me of TAAB
and from their 2nd release

Little known UK band Gygafo from 1973 Weird piece of music, sounding progressive in the beginning with some Tullish rhythms and some kind-of-but-not-really Tullish flute, but then the whole thing just takes a bizarre and unexpected turn once the vocals and heavy metal guitar lead kick in. I know I've got a lot of catching up to do in this thread, and also in Rob's thread and the 'home truths' thread, but I will eventually find some time to sample, and comment on, a lot more of your videos, Preston! Unfortunately, I have been having a summer from hell work-wise, which has been limiting my time here lately, except for today. Jeff

You asked where I find all of these....well its just an interest that I have. I collect flute progressive rock music. I love the use of flute in progressive music. It really irks me when Ian boldly says that only one or two groups use the flute in rock music .
As you can see in this thread Tull has influenced the sound of some bands , but most have developed their own way of using the flute to embellish their musical ideas.
In the mean time some more great flute prog rock from the wonderful flor de loto

But I also think it's important that it's mixed properly - not to high. Ian, since probably the Roots album has mixed the flute so high that I find I don't enjoy it as much. In fact I'd love to hear him write something new with little or no flute at all. But thanks for this thread. It's great.

A acoustic live version of the Witching Hour performed by Yokeshire from the USA. Check out some Tull influenced flute in the latter half of the song. Their double CD the Witching Hour contains loads of flute and is very electric with lots of instrumental passages unlike this stripped down basic tune
from the album check out Triskelion

The second selection sounded a bit like Catfish-era Tull in places. I checked out their website too (they're from Boston), and in an interview posted there, they allude to their classic rock influences including Tull, Queen, Gentle Giant, etc. www.yokeshire.com/pages/articles.htmlThese guys are very cool.
