thequietus.com/articles/03678-midlake-the-courage-of-others-album-review"There is a theory that, say, the incredible Stateside success of Jethro Tull – soon to be investigated on this site – now reflects powerfully within the new breed of American bands... that Tull perhaps, tapped into some kind of folk undercurrent. Today, and nowhere more profoundly that within the music of Midlake, this does appear to be the case."

Have you listened to their new CD? I sampled a few tracks on Itunes but didn't care for what I heard - although that of course means nothing. Most song samples sound automated to my ears.

I did read a brief review of this album in which the reviewer described the album as sounding dispassionate. That's an accurate way to describe the feeling I got from hearing their samples. Didn't sound like Tull to me.

I downloaded a recent album of theirs (the one before the current release, I believe) and it sounded nothing like Tull. Although I understand some of their earlier albums were more Tull-ish. Jeff

cant say ive ever heard another band sounding anything like tull, thats why we like em they are a one off sound, other bands have said tull were an influence but still have there own sound , ian was influenced by lots of other artists but its better not to go down that path of imitation and just do your own " thing " .

Paul, I would say that the closest would have to be some of the middle-era Horslips albums in terms of the guitar riffs, similar flute style and song structures, however the vocalist sounds nothing like Ian. Their earlier material is nothing like Tull though, if anything it is more like an Irish Fairport or Steeleye, because it is traditional music, and then their later albums have many influences including Dylan and The Dead, and their last album sounds downright new wave.
I am going to be featuring them next on Flutist of the Week, focusing on their most Tullish albums, The Tain, Book of Invasions (their Brick) and especially Aliens, so keep an eye out for some samples.
Jeff
