A great idea was started by Serge (Janu) last month, he suggested that we post songs about wind and we got so many great ones. We thought it would be fun to continue this. Our March theme will be about "ships"
From Merriam-Webster
a large craft for travel by water, space <a cruise ship plying the warm waters of the Caribbean>
Synonyms boat, keel, vessel Related Words aircraft carrier, argosy, barge, coaster, collier, containership, corvette, cruiser, cutter, destroyer, ferryboat, flagship, freighter, icebreaker, ironclad, lightship, liner, man-of-war (also man-o'-war), merchantman, merchant ship, motor ship, packet, steamer, steamship, superliner, supertanker, tanker, trader, tramp, transport, warship, watercraft; bark (or barque), brig, brigantine, caravel, clipper, junk, ketch, sailboat, schooner, square-rigger, tall ship, windjammer, xebec, yacht

No mention of the word "ship", but it is a great song that is certainly relevant!
Well I'm on the Downeaster "Alexa" And I'm cruising through Block Island Sound I have charted a course to the Vineyard But tonight I am Nantucket bound
We took on diesel back in Montauk yesterday And left this morning from the bell in Gardiner's Bay Like all the locals here I've had to sell my home Too proud to leave I worked my fingers to the bone
So I could own my Downeaster "Alexa" And I go where the ocean is deep There are giants out there in the canyons And a good captain can't fall asleep
I've got bills to pay and children who need clothes I know there's fish out there but where God only knows They say these waters aren't what they used to be But I've got people back on land who count on me
So if you see my Downeaster "Alexa" And if you work with the rod and the reel Tell my wife I am trawling Atlantis And I still have my hands on the wheel
Now I drive my Downeaster "Alexa" More and more miles from shore every year Since they tell me I can't sell no stripers And there's no luck in swordfishing here.
I was a bayman like my father was before Can't make a living as a bayman anymore There ain't much future for a man who works the sea But there ain't no island left for islanders like me

Oooops I am a day early ...I forgot it was a leap year!!!! Well done, Charly. What an excellent songs you've recorded. I had some of them for later posts , particularly "The Flying Dutchman" by Jethro, I think it would may be the finest tune of this sailing March, wouldn't it? Don't feel embarrased for having started it up a day early, and as a very famous refrain says: "don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today" And yes, you'd certainly be afraid of sailing under those heavy storms My first one to start this new exciting oceanic journey, of course Jethro's. Broadsword . I see a dark saill on the horizon set under a black cloud that hides the sun. Thanks Charly for carrying on with the concept

Something On The Move
The lady of the ice sounds A deathly distant rumble to Titanic-breaking childrens lost In melting crystal tears
Panama Freighter
Night close in on a shanty town. Panama freighter wearing rusty brown. She sails tomorrow and she's homeward bound. Head up on a lumpy sea.

This was a great song live too. They opened the "Broadsword" show in Charlotte, North Carolina '82 with that tune.

Excellents finds, folks MARCH'S OCEANIC ROUTE HAS JUST BEGUN. LET'S GET ON THE BOAT.NAVIGATE WITH US. I had this good DS' song available for the windy thread although now I notice it's also flawless for this one. We'll be seeing that Winds and ships are related subjects on some songs. Where to post them? here, of course ;D Yeah and a sailing ship is just held down in chainsFrom the lazy days of sail She's just a lying there in silent pain He lean on the tourist rail

We can post them in both...right. great song Serge
Preston I have listened to the first 5 minutes of the Tangent song I love the drums in the beginning. I will get to the 15 or so minutes. I like this song
Jim I liked the Stormwatch tour as well, when they played most of the album. One of the shows I went to was in Providence and it was postponed for a day. It was after the "Famous Rose Incident, after some one threw a rose on stage and hit Ian in the eye. Terry Ellis made a stage announcement at the start of the show, regarding about throwing anything on stage. Ian wore glasses for a few shows so his retina could heal. I also loved how Broadsword opened with the "ship" one of the greatest stage prop, that Tull has used (IMO)

The song isn't about a ship but does mention one that always evokes emotion. Mountain Men- "and from the church I hear the singing as the ship moves sadly from the pier" Great imagery and I alway think about a ship of young men off to war

XTC - Yacht Dance
Oddly always thought that XTC might have been influenced by Tull/Anderson in some way. I love this album, and despite having a few more XTC albums on the shelves, have never experienced one that approaches this one for enjoyment. Andy Partridge and Ian could have made a good collaborative pairing possibly.
This from the YouTube page of "fallingdown08".........
"From their 1982 album English Settlement Lyrics:
We, we will dance like tiny boats with cotton sails upon the tops of the seas, That would pull us down to the depths and crush us flat if given half a chance. No need to look back to pictures of lost, when all was rust. We, we will skim across the surface of the mud as if we're spinning pebbles Oh, in our yacht dance Oh, in our yacht dance We, we will dance like tiny boats with cotton sails upon the tops of the seas, Made of people stained with scorn who never see the light of real love. No need to look back through diaries of lost now turned to dust. We, we will skate across the surface of the storm as if we're wheeling sea-birds. Oh, in our yacht dance Oh, in our yacht dance And how they'll be jealous of both of us! In our yacht dance. We, we will dance like tiny boats with cotton sails upon the tops of the seas, That would pull us down to the depths and crush us flat if given half a chance. No need to look back to pictures of lost, when all was rust. We, we will skim across the surface of the mud as if we're spinning pebbles Oh, in our yacht dance Oh, in our yacht dance."

Steph, nice to see Bill Nelson in there, despite the glitzy performance, always thought he was a great guitarist and BeBop Deluxe were a good band.
Here's another, ths one "Longer Boats", from Cat Stevens might exclude it as the explanation he gives in later life for the hidden meaning he refers to at the start is that the longer boats are in fact alien spaceships visiting the earth......well it was the 70's.
