Thanks for sharing that Hades video, Janu, I listened to the whole thing and enjoyed it. Plenty of Tull-ish sounding music and flute-playing, somewhat reminiscent of the This Was era, but not quite the same either. Happy New Year to you! Jeff

I dont know anything about this band Quanti Minoris but stumbled across this very Tull like track check out the flute at 1.00 Big sound and pretty like Tull one, i liked very much. At their website i managed to get some proper info from them cause it is written in Czechoslovakian language, don't understand at all, eheh, but elementary they come from there. The name of the band in english means Castle rock, they formed in 1998 and their medieval music sprang up travelling from castles to castles all around the country. Hope to have been helpful, Preston. more info: www.quantiminoris.cz/o-nas.p2.html

Long live the flute prog rock thread!! ;D Thanks Preston. I liked very much both those Germans and Australians bands who I never listened before. I think the flute section played by Johnny Almond in this Mayall's blues song is worthy to be listened around here

I've been enjoying your boys' videos and of course the amazing flute prog thread, which Janu has recently joined! I listened to the one by Gloria's Children when you first posted it and thought it was really excellent. Plenty of Tull-inspired flute there, and I like when the vocals kick in near the end. Very good song. (One of these days I have to catch up with all of the videos you and Janu have posted here!) Jeff

Atavism of Twilight Pillar of salt This one was alright, but I didn't love it. It seemed a bit repetitious to me, so I got a little bored about half-way through. Lots of good flute, somewhat resembling Ian's but not exactly. A little reminiscent of Dharma for One, but different. Then suddenly, some guitar that reminded me of Steve Hackett. Jeff

Jeff Jeff, i think Preston hasn't got the intention of adding flute prog rock videos that are resembling or exceding on quality Ian or Tull, that's impossible in this life , the idea of the thread is another one, it's my IMO. You didn't comment anything about mine ;D One tune with a lot of flute, overall a masterpiece for your ears and which the vinyl i have at home. enjoy

Hi, Janu!
Don't worry, I will be sampling and commenting on some of the bands you have posted as well. There's just so many videos to listen to on this thread, it's really incredible!
Even though I realize that not all of the bands on this thread are clones of Tull, and some are very different, I like to point out similarities and differences where appropriate. The song Pillar of Salt by Atavism of Twilight did have some similarities to Tull -- I thought it sounded a little like Dharma for One in places -- but major differences as well.
Jeff

Hi all you, hard Tull fan fellows, today i've got a thrilling surprise for you. Yesterday I met an old belgium friend who lives in Spain and who is a great collector of such a good music as Tull's he is, he bought recently the last issue of Tull too, Stand Up's new release and talkin about music in general, he recommended me this band, The Watch, from Italy, and he asks me intriguinly whom the voice of the singer recalled me, it's fairly easy to know it. You should guess by yourself. He told me that they have the permission to play live some tunes from that well known band i'm dealing about. I've added this tube in this thread because obviously there is some good flute playing in this song. Enjoy and comment, eheh

Thanks for the Watch Genesis cover . I saw this band last year at Summers End in the UK. The singer sounds just like Peter Gabriel and they are able to perform classic Genesis songs with ease. Their original material is ok as well

I had almost forgotten why this thread began... so here are some of my reasons taken and revised from some earlier posts Thought it might be good to post some videos of relatively unknown flute prog bands
I guess this thread definately proves that the flute is used a lot in prog and rock music. These videos all challenge Ians assertion that Tull are one of only a handful of bands who have utilised the flute in rock music However, the question of whether these bands were influenced by Tull or if Ian was influenced by them is a difficult one. I guess its good to remember that music that features the flute does not automatically have to be associated with Tull. In fact many of the bands featured here have nothing in common with Tull except for the use of the flute. For many ,thats about the only connection full stop, as the flute style is in no way similar to Ians. I just love the flute as a instrument in all of its guises in 20th century rock music
