Bruce has the E-Street Band, Neil Young had Crazy Horse, Bowie had Tin Machine. Should Ian give this group it's own identity rather than just calling themselves Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson's band?  |

Yes, Ian Anderson & The Bakker Street Muse (aka, The Official Jethro Tull Tribute Band). This simplist thing then would be to have Ian change his name to Jethro Tull, which is what half the world thinks anyway, otherwise just call it Jethro Tull and be damned. |

I have voted: Just call them Jethro Tull since Ian is Tull... but I would like to ad something to that statement... To me Jethro Tull is who ever Ian makes a cd with, if Ian writes the basic music, and the lyrics, then this to me is Jethro Tull. Take a look at Thick As A Brick 2... In order to sell this new CD, we are reminded that Ian is really from Jethro Tull. I think it's because too many people wouldn't know that Ian Anderson is such a huge part of Jethro Tull. The sad thing is that many people don't even know that Jethro Tull exist... At least here in Denmark... Those who know Jethro Tull might not know Ian Anderson, and because of that they probably wont buy A CD with someone called Ian Anderson... I think Ian should call it Jethro Tull... I'll nibble but not bite... If Ian thought it were Tull without Martin then he would simply call it that. I know that Ian said that he wouldn't call it Jethro Tull if Martin wasn't in the band... I just don't agree with him... |

I know that Ian said that he wouldn't call it Jethro Tull if Martin wasn't in the band... I just don't agree with him... No offense but I'll go with Ian's opinion. I totally respect that. Martin is my all time favorite guitarist, and I would like to see him working together with Ian again... it's a shame... Martin is magic... |

We already have: Jethro Tull... and: Ian Anderson... I think that adding a third name to the list, will only add to the confusion... It's simply not user-friendly... I believe that it will affect CD and DVD sales in a negative way. To keep the train sliding... keep it simple... It's hard enough to sell music as it is nowadays...

I think that a band name should be short. If it's a very long name, I believe that it's too hard to remember... I also think that it should have a magic ring to it... (... whatever that is... lol... what sounds magic to me, might not sound magic to you...) Pink Floyd is a great name, The Doors and The Who... in my opinion... and to me these band names have this magic quality... A name that starts with: "Ian Anderson and the......" Is already too long, and if we skip the name Ian Anderson entirely... only long time fans would probably know who they are... The Baker Street Muse has a nice ring to it... but who the hell are they?? To me the music by, Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson, or Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson means everything, but there is also a business side to it... I just needed to say that because what comes next might seem a little cold... lol... ( I just hate talking about my favorite band and money!) We all know Coca Cola! Coca Cola have a place in my mind... and they have a place in yours... that means money! If I talk to people here in Denmark about Jethro Tull, I can almost be 100 % certain that the first thing they will say to me is: "Who is Jethro Tull?" They don't know Jethro Tull, and because they don't know them, they don't, or can't, buy their CD's... (... and maybe they wouldn't anyway...) ...so it's a very long struggle, to have your name seared into the minds of many...

Well your really working this. Magic wise and business wise....the magic in an old name is the history behind it or because people recognize it, like the Doors the who, Jethro Tull. If it's a new "magic" name like " Too" is not known and has no history (as a great sounding band) so it's not all that "magic"
The business side of it would be the recognizability of the name to sell product or seats. So Ian using "Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson" pretty much covers all areas of anyone that's going to recognize any thing at all.
That said, since such a high percentage of the people you would ask, reply "Who's Jethro Tull?" What would porpoise would be served by re naming "Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson and his band".
After all, wether we like it or not, I think Ian probably gave all this a little thought before he did it. Too

This is mostly ratio versus emotion, isn't it?
Jethro Tull/Ian Andersons music has been with me since 73. The 73-78 period was the best - to me. It was also a period in my life, late teens that was going to be very influential in my later life. So for more than just the music alone I perfer that period, although I think that is was also Ians best writing in tha period.
But in later years the band may have changed, the music remained important, so did the concerts (good or less good as they sometimes are).
The current line up can give me a very happy evening, but it has not got that something very special, very exciting, brilliance. So - Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson is more than good enough for me.

Good thing the fans don't actually have to name anything as Ian has already taken care of that.
If somebody dosen't know who J Tull is then what album are you going to give them to discover "Jethro Tull"?

Pieter When I made the OP I was originally thinking whether or not the guys in the band deserved some recognition or identity behind the man with the flute. Ian seems very comfortable with this line up which did make it seem rather odd when I heard him say that at any point any one of these guys may be replaced. |
